The Role
Based in the Reading office, everyone without exception fantastic to work with. They truly support your work by explaining what you did well and how to improve even further going forward. There is a variety of work that can be completed!
As an intern, you are obviously one of the least important members of the team, however, my team went the extra mile to make sure I was included. For example, I was able to shadow a senior manager with his calls which gave me a better understanding of the corporate environment.
Support is available if you ask. I was able to easily ask my career coach or buddy for advice if I needed to.
Due to the time of year, there were occasions where work was slightly less available. This is due the line of service I was in (Deals) which isn't as cyclical as Assurance. However, if you search for work like I did, then it won't be long before you are given tasks. There is always the opportunity to work on an independent project and complete some form of business development.
There were times where I was given a lot responsibility with tasks. For example, I had to run through an entire slide deck and spot any mistakes that may occur. This required me to be very vigilant and gain at the very least a rudimentary understanding of the content within each page. I was still a member of the team and my work directly went to the client at times which was exciting!
PwC allows you to genuinely experience a corporate environment while simultaneously seeing everyone as individual people. By working on deliverables with high stakes, the quality of my work improved.
The Company
The office is very quiet with everyone focussing on the tasks at hand. Most meetings occur in separate rooms that are sound-proofed for confidentiality reasons. PwC has a system of hot-desking which means you can sit anywhere you want in the entire office. While lines of service will stick together, this, does give you the chance to interact with senior staff members as you may be sat next to a partner or director of the firm . My team regularly brought treats and snacks for everyone too which was nice.
The first week was seamless, however, when I was supposed to start a piece of work, there was a little bit of waiting time and limited amount of things to do. This only occured at the beginning, once I was settled in, the structure was much more visible. Out of the total 6 weeks for which I was there, 90% of the time, I knew what I was supposed to do, or who to go to if I didn't have anything to do.
PwC provides you with a Thinkpad laptop, (these laptops are the same brand that are used on the International Space Station) an iPhone 6s, and several freebies, such as a branded PwC folder, computer accessories (mouse, headphones, hdmi port), water bottle, and pen. You are there to contribute to the work and are expected to use all available resources to your benefit. There are regular feedback sessions with resourcing and members of staff to check on your personal development. This extends not just to interns but to other members of staff who will also have feedback sessions. (e.g. senior associate with a manager, or a senior manager with a partner etc.)

Working from home
Hours: I can honestly enter the office for a 9am start and leave by 5:30am every single day. 80% of people will leave by 6pm. There may be the occasional long day, however this is the the exception. Pay: Pay may not be similar to an Investment Bank, however, compensation is reasonable and progresses quickly once you qualify with the ACA. Line of Service: Deals is a very exciting place to work - particularly the Business Recovery Service Unit, which in my humble opinion has the best atmosphere and work-life balance. If offered a placement, I would seriously consider PwC as the positives are numerous and negatives limited.
The Culture
Other interns were very active in socialising. This is helped from the first day of the internship. I am in a whatsapp group with the other interns, and we regularly have lunch together and bond over stories and general chatting. Additionally, from the first week of the internship, I was able to meet other interns in my line of service from across the UK. I was able to get in touch and chat with over the phone with other interns outside of my office.
PwC has so many offices around the UK that there is likely one near you! For me it was 30 minutes on the train or about 45 minutes door to door, so not too bad. Being based in Reading, meant that there is a good social life, however, to save money it was my interest to commute. PwC does subsidise travel to an office that is NOT your main office. E.g. my travel to London was paid for by my Reading commute was not.
Did not participate in the nightlife in my city base.
There is a social network for people of similar races, genders, religion, etc. There are also numerous sports clubs. I played in a PwC Touch Rugby tournament which involved other companies in the area. There is a football signup every Monday, and a table-tennis table on one floor. There was plenty of travel to London (I went 4 times!), and firm-wide events which bring people from across the UK together.
