The Role
I very much enjoyed my internship with PwC. All the staff in the office were incredibly helpful and very friendly. The office had a great atmosphere which was very relaxed and everyone was given large amounts of responsibility and freedom which allowed them to choose when and where to work.
The colleagues that I worked with at PwC couldn't have been more welcoming. They made me feel part of the various teams that I worked in and supported me and gave me help whenever I needed it. It was also nice that people would genuinely thank you for your work and this helped me feel like I was making a valuable contribution.
I was given exceptional amounts of support and guidance by the people that I worked with. Whilst I was given a lot of responsibility and freedom for an intern, there was always somebody on hand to ask for help whenever I was stuck or unsure about something. Almost always my colleagues would stop what they were doing and give up their time to help, which was very generous of them.
I was fairly busy on a daily basis. There were only a couple of days were there wasn't much to do, and I was able to leave slightly early, however some of the other interns working in the office often stayed late and were given more work than I was, so it really varies how much work you are actually given.
I was surprised how much responsibility I was given, right from the start of the various projects I was given to do. There was almost always someone on hand to ask for support or guidance whenever I needed it, but I would most often be able to work on my own and complete most of my assignments in the deadlines that were given to me.
The training was more tailored to the social side of things, which made it very enjoyable and we were very busy at times during the training week. The skills that I learned to use the various software and computer programmes that PwC uses were important, however I actually found that you learn much more whilst on a job in the office than you do in a classroom. My technical skills and computing abilities have improved greatly during my six week internship, however that mainly came from practice and getting used to the software in the office, rather than the week of training where there is just so much to learn you do at times feel like you are just being bombarded with information.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was very relaxed, however everyone still worked very hard and all work was completed on time. As the internship scheme runs through the summer, which is generally the quiet time of year for the Big 4 firms, and in particular the Assurance line of service, I am sure that the office would be much busier and probably more fast-paced from January-March, however I did get a sense that the office was always a very friendly place to work and everyone did much enjoy working there. The free tea and coffee was very generous and there was often free food that was put out for us at various points in the day.
The overall internship scheme was incredibly well run, and shows why it is one of the most successful schemes in the country. Almost every intern that I have spoken to also greatly enjoyed their experience, and there are many people working within the office who originally started as an intern. The first week of training was very enjoyable and much more relaxed than I thought it was going to be, and then the five weeks of work gave me a great insight into it is like to work for one of the Big 4 firms.
