    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I found my internship to be very enjoyable for two reasons: i) the people, and ii) the responsibility given to you. First, the people in the office are extremely open and friendly and ready to chat to you regardless of their seniority, even senior partners took the time to chat and advise me on the opportunities available to me within the organisation. Second, after an initial induction you are thrown right into client work. You are given the chance to take responsibility and ownership for your work, and I was even given the opportunity to hold short meetings by myself with the financial director of one our clients.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt like I was valued by my colleagues and supervisors. We were given responsibility early on, which I thought was a testament to the trust they had in us. Furthermore, my colleagues and supervisors were extremely open and friendly, and I felt like I was able to approach about them if I ever had a question; we were actively encouraged to ask questions. We were also given regular feedback from our supervisors on the quality of our work, our strengths, and areas of development. The combination of being given responsibility, the open environment and regular feedback was a testament to my colleagues鈥 and supervisors鈥 willingness to help me progress and made me feel valued.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • As I already mentioned, the people are extremely friendly and approachable. Even several senior partners took the time to talk to me about the opportunities within the organisation and advised me on how I could progress my career. However, I think it is very much up to yourself to approach different people within the office and be inquisitive. In short, you can get all the support and guidance you want if you ask for it.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was always busy with work throughout the internship. However, I noticed that some of the interns would occasionally have a few slower days. I do think you can always be busy, but it is up to the intern to let their supervisors know that they have finished work. Generally supervisors will be quick to assign you more work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I felt like I was given more responsibility during this internship than previous ones I have completed. If you are interested, keen and show that you will take ownership for your work, you can be given a lot of responsibility. For example, one of my supervisors was happy for me to hold short meetings with the financial director of a client by myself. I was also given the opportunity to work on complex aspects of an audit, which are generally only completed by associates with at least one year of experience.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Over the course of the internship I felt like I was able to develop only a very basic understanding of accounting. However, given that this was only a 6 week internship, I feel like it is not possible to gain a deep understanding of anything really. Rather than having developed a skill, I feel like I am coming out of this internship as someone who is more inquisitive and curious. Throughout the internship we were told to ask as many questions as possible, and I think this will help me further on in my career

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Despite the work being stressful at times, the general atmosphere in the office is extremely relaxed. The people are extremely open, friendly and approachable, which made me feel very comfortable in the office. I really have to emphasise that the people in the office were the highlight of the internship. The combination of really friendly people and a well-designed and comfortable office makes for a really good atmosphere.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I found the internship to be well organised. The first week was dedicated to induction, with the first three days spent at an off-site hotel complex near London. The first three days were attended by all UK PwC interns. Overall, the training and teamwork activities were well organised, and we were given multiple opportunities to network with senior staff during the induction. The following 5 weeks were dedicated to working on several client projects. The resourcing team would try and take your interests into account when allocating work to you. For example, I told them that I was interested in working on a charity or not-for-profit client, and they quickly assigned me to a charity job for a week. During the 5 weeks of client work, most interns worked on between 3-5 different clients (generally a week or two per client), which I thought was a good way to get exposure to different industries. Overall, I found the internship to have been very well organised.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • In terms of formal training, we had several training sessions relating to the principles of accounting during the induction week. Throughout the rest of the internship we were coached by our supervisors, and I felt like they generally took the time to explain the work that we were doing so and how your work related to the overall projects. I therefore do believe I have developed a basic understanding of the audit process. In terms of development, I felt like people were approachable and were willing to chat about their experiences and give you advice. I also felt like the organisation wasn鈥檛 trying to limit me to working in Assurance (the line of service I had applied for). For example, I got an opportunity to work in data assurance after requesting to try it out. Everyone I chatted to, and particularly my mentor (known as a 鈥淧eople Manger鈥 at PwC), was keen to discuss my opportunities at the firm and tried to help me find the best position within the firm for me, even if that meant changing lines of service or location.

  • National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • For a graduate, one of the most appealing aspects is that you become a qualified chartered accountant after 3 years if you work in the Assurance line of service (I believe Tax graduates do the same qualification 鈥 other lines of service may do other qualifications). PwC pays for the qualification and courses, and will give you time off to study for the exams associated with the qualification. Having spoken to some people on the graduate scheme and others who have completed the qualification, it seems to be a very highly regarded qualification within the finance industry. Second, due to the diversity of clients that PwC has, graduates get exposure and experience in different industries and generally become well rounded. Also, there seem to be many opportunities for promotion.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • There were 6 interns at the Edinburgh office while I was there. The other interns were all really friendly and fun to hang out with which made work very enjoyable. We would also sometimes go out for a drink after work on Fridays. Only 2 of the interns (including myself), were not from Edinburgh (the location of internship). They all had friends and family in Edinburgh, and didn鈥檛 seem too keen to hang out outside of work. As a result, I mainly hung out with the other intern who was not from Edinburgh outside of work. Given that I didn鈥檛 know anyone in Edinburgh prior to the internship, it would have been nice if the other interns had put in more effort to socialise outside of work.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The internship coincided with the Edinburgh Fringe (a big month long arts festival in Edinburgh). As a result, accommodation was scarce and expensive. I ended up paying around 750GBP in rent for 6 weeks (I met interns working in Glasgow who paid less than half of what I was paying in rent). I assume that it is easier to find accommodation that is cheaper when the Fringe is not on. The benefit of the internship being during the Fringe is that there were a lot of shows to go to after work or on the weekends. On the whole, Edinburgh is not known to be a cheap city, therefore socialising can be expensive.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Edinburgh seems to have quite a lot of pubs, bars and clubs. The nightlife seems to be quite good. However, given that I was new to the city and the other interns weren鈥檛 very keen on socialising outside of work, I probably did not take full advantage of the nightlife in Edinburgh.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There weren鈥檛 many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work for interns. However, I was told that there were many clubs (mainly sports clubs) in the office. For example, one of my supervisors played in the firm鈥檚 football club and another played badminton. I was also told that clubs will do trips as well, for example, one colleague told me about her recent trip to Berlin with her club. Although there don鈥檛 seem to be many opportunities for interns, there seem to be many for full time staff.
