The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my 6 weeks with PWC. I have managed to work on a wide range of clients and completed a variety of tasks. I nearly always had work to do and felt no task was out of my depth. Having no background in accountancy, I know have a far greater knowledge of assurance and feel comfortable perform audit tasks.
From the get go I felt valued by all of my colleagues. The managers regularly came over to see how I was progressing and that i was understanding the task expected of me. I was asked to attend meetings with clients, where my manager asked for my opinion, making me feel valued. The tasks I was given were explained in great detail to ensure I understood why my particular was important and how it added value.
I was given an huge amount of guidance both from management and other graduates. Everyone was willing to answer question, regardless of whether they were working on the same project as you. My induction office tutor was fantastic and always came over to see how I was getting on. The managers spent a lot of time explaining the task required in order to ensure i understood what was needed.
Overall, i was relatively busy throughout my internship. However, there was one week when I was not booked to anything so I did have to search for work. Sometimes I was booked on to a client for a week but the work actually required 2/3 days work this meant I was having to search for work the other few days. Having said that it was relatively easy to find work.
I was given a high level of responsibility during my placement. I had to complete several reports that will be presented to audit committees and helped design a new reporting format. Some tasks were very basic, for example preparing EGA's, but these were limited. During my first visit to a client I was asked by my manager to lead a conversation with the client.
As i do not study accountancy at university the technical knowledge I was acquired will not be used. Nevertheless, the softer skills such as teamwork, time management and communication will be extremely useful for my final year. When returning to work, the skills learned will definitely assist me.
The Company
The atmosphere in my office was chatty and sociable. Whilst people have work to complete everyone was willing to stop and have a chat. This was made easier by being situated at the hot desks so I was surrounded my new people daily. Every week a office quiz was ran which was always fun and enjoyable and got people talking.
The first week was very well organised. The three day residential induction in Windsor was a perfection combination of technical training and team building/networking events. This was supported by the two day office induction where we became familiar with our office and more general things (email, expenses etc). When in the office the internship was organised but to a lesser extent, especially when I had no work to do.
Having only work there for 6 weeks I believe PWC invested heavily in the interns. As already mentioned, the three day residential ensured we had a good assurance knowledge before heading in to the office. If ever I had free time there was always online courses for me to complete and was always challenged my managers to develop further.

All the interns in my office were offered jobs at the end of the six weeks. It is consistently ranked first foe graduate employers and after my internship I can understand why. PWC are willing to invest in you massively, both my training and your ACA exams. The people at PWC definitely sold the company, they are all friendly, supportive and approachable.
The Culture
The other interns were really great and definitely made my internship even more enjoyable. We always had lunch together and would always sit together in the office. However, due to the location of our office, there was limited socialising outside of the office. However, if I was to come I believe socials with your year group would be arranged. Within the office, once a month there is a drink and cake at 4pm, which is a nice break from work and allows you to socialise with other lines of service.
The East Midlands is a cheap place to both live and socialise. Due to the office location you did have to have a car however rent, compared to London, is more affordable .
Again, due to office location there was limited social places near work. The nearest town is Nottingham, which has very good nightlife. However, due to the interns living all over the midlands a night out requires a lot of planning and unfortunately no spontaneous nights out can be had.
During my six weeks I attended an office quiz and a cricket match. I believe the social club/ assurance social team arrange several activities throughout the year such as go-karting and the races. Whilst I was there I was not exposed to any sports team, again this is probably down to location.
