The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed the PwC Summer Internship. It was both enjoyable and rewarding. I learnt a huge amount in a short period of time and am sad to be leaving!
The jobs my colleagues gave me from day 1 was worthwhile work. It involved working with clients to assist them with their problems and my colleagues were very helpful whenever I had a query.
My people manager and my buddy were both extremely helpful throughout the internship. If I ever had a question, they would respond straight away to help me deal with the issue at hand.
I have been constantly busy since the minute I stepped foot in the office. That has been great because it means there is never a dull day. It also has meant I have been learning constantly.
I have been given responsibility to complete many client-facing jobs. This includes, but is not limited to, calling clients, meeting clients, emailing clients and organising meetings.
The internship was not entirely relevant to my degree course but the self-discipline that I have learnt this summer will assist me greatly going into final year at university. Being able to motivate myself to get to work early every day and work hard for a full day will stand me well for year 3.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office is serious and quiet but individuals do speak to each other when they have a query about something. This is as I expected and it is conducive to good productivity. Individuals do have a laugh occasionally and the environment tends to be more relaxed on Fridays (dress-down Fridays) or on the day before a bank-holiday (for example) as fewer people are in the office.
The internship began with a residential at a hotel in Windsor which brought together all of UK's summer interns. This 3-day residential was seamless and was very enjoyable. Since then, I have been working in the office every day. Whenever I finish a job, individuals are very happy to delegate more work to fill my time, meaning I do not have a set structure to my days.
The firm invested heavily in us at our 3-day training induction at DeVere Beaumont Estate in Windsor. This event was completely paid for and involved significant training and development for all of us interns. Since then, there is less obvious signs of the firm investing in us as interns but I don't think this is necessarily important. If interns join after university as a graduate, that is where more investment will take place in individuals.
Subsidised Canteen
I am currently not sure if I will be offered a graduate role at PwC but I would very much like to join as a graduate after university. It is a firm with a very strong graduate scheme and I believe I should be finding out in the next few days if I will be offered a permanent role or not. Either way, I have very much enjoyed the experience of working for such a large firm for 6 weeks.
The Culture
I think this very much depends which office you are placed in and which team you work within. Since I joined, I have only been to one social event on an evening which was a welcome drinks for a colleague joining the team from Australia. I have heard stories from interns in other offices about drinks nights with other interns but no such thing took place at my office, meaning I fell out of touch somewhat with other interns in my office (as it is so large)!
The cost of living and socialising in central London is clearly very high as expected. It is one of the most expensive places to live in the world but many firms compensate individuals for living in a more expensive area. Thankfully, I was able to live at home during the internship so my accommodation costs were zero. However, this did mean I spent a lot of money on travelling to work each day which was not reimbursed by PwC.
I did not experience the nightlife in the area that I was working so I am unable to comment on this aspect. I imagine it would be expensive as it is in central London. There are a number of bars and cafes around the area I worked in (near Embankment Tube Station) so I imagine the nightlife is reasonable. There is also direct transport links to the rest of London if individuals wanted to travel to an area for a specific bar/nightclub.
I was fortunate enough to work with a colleague who was part of PwC's rugby team. They are part of The City League which is a league of some of London's largest financial firms who all play rugby against each other twice per season. This individual asked me if I would like to play for the team as I have a lot of playing experience from university. Unfortunately the match was called off but it was still an exciting opportunity to get involved with.
