The Role
The first week of the internship was organised for us and was really enjoyable. However, there was a lot less organisation after this and I struggled to get work a lot of the time due to the hugely technical department I was in. I found it hard to get involved in the technical aspects of the department,.
My team were all very nice and I felt that they were trying to involve me as much as possible. As mentioned before, it was difficult to get involved with the technical parts of the jobs but this wasn't really the fault of the team members trying to give me jobs. I think the fault lies with the people that set up the internships and they should make it mandatory that we have to undertake a project.
The buddy I was assigned did a great job of making sure I was always busy and had work to do. However, he went away for 2 weeks and I was left without any real guidance and mentoring. My manager was very nice but was not around much and didn't contribute to my work supply at all.
I had some days where I was incredibly busy, mainly due to the extensive learning I was undertaking for work I had never really experiences. I also had days where I had next to nothing to do, and almost had to stretch out my tasks so that they lasted a whole day.
I was given a fair bit of responsibility on several different jobs. My tasks meant that I was directly affecting a job and the outcome which was sometimes scary if I did things wrong but was also the best way to learn. This responsibility meant that I worked to a better standard and mistakes were not an option.
My skills will not help me with my degree as I do an unrelated degree. However, they will help me with later in life when I go into a more related job. Also, skills I have learnt will help outside of work as they are things I am interested in, so will go a long way.
The Company
The office is very social and everyone has a good time at work. However, I find that I am a different type of person and find it hard to work when people aren't working as efficiently as possible. For this reason, it seems a bit too social and laid back for me.
As I said, the first week was very well organised but the time after that was not. For this reason, I struggled for work a lot of the time. I think the time after the first week could have been organised a lot better. This could have been done with more involvement by the people that organised the internship in the first place.
Apart from the first week, which was useful for getting to know the interns, the company did not invest heavily in me. However, to be fair to them, they did not have a lot of opportunity to do so. There are interns that have had the opportunity to go to client sites but I was not one of them.
Subsidised Canteen
Pretty good. There is a clear progression scheme for anyone that works hard, which is definitely a huge plus for the company. And unlike other companies, the time limit for these stages is not limited so there is the opportunity to move up much quicker than expected. All companies should do something similar.
The Culture
We as interns really spent a lot of time with each other, doing something every Friday. In addition, my team did hang around a fair bit when important things happened, such as new joiners and people leaving! I also had a lot of social interaction with other interns from around the country and so have kept in touch with them.
Very expensive seeing as though its London. However I was lucky and was living with my Auntie for the time I worked at the company. However, I still felt the costs of socialising and that was a lot more than what I am used to. There is also the cost of the daily commute Londoners have to do.
I didn't do much clubbing, but the centre of London is buzzing at all times of day.
There are plenty of opportunities throughout London for things to do.
