The Role
I very much enjoyed my time at PwC. I was welcomed into the team, and everyone ensured I had interesting work to do throughout. Everyone was friendly, and I got on well with them. The residential at the beginning of the internship was particularly enjoyable, and allowed me to get to know lots of interns throughout the company.
I felt that my colleagues definitely made use of me, and I was doing actual work that saved them time. To that extent, I definitely felt valued by my colleagues, and enjoyed working with all of them. In preparation for my end of internship review, I was tasked with gathering feedback from some of my colleagues, and this was all very positive, and showed that I as indeed valued.
Whenever I needed help or guidance on a piece of work, everyone was happy to help. I think the relatively young age of my colleagues meant that they all remembered what it was like to have just started, and so were very willing to provide help where possible. I always felt that I was given enough of a briefing to complete work accurately, and I felt that I could ask questions if in need.
This is one minor negative, whilst I generally did have work, this wasn't always the case. I never felt like I was working hard 'all day' and I had an hour or two here and there in which I felt I had little to do. However, in this time I could take part in the internship challenge- the 'dragons den challenge' which did help. Overall though, slightly more work would have been better.
I felt that i was given proper work that would save colleagues time and eventually make its way to clients. I think this was balanced well however with a thorough oversight policy, whereby any work produced by me would run through at least one other person, who would suggest changes/alterations which I would then make. I think this was an ideal balance.
I believe that my time management skills, and ability to work for long hours has been improved. I feel next year at uni- my final year- I shall try and treat study like a '9-5 job', rather than studying at random times as I have been doing for the last 2 years. I also feel that the skills gained will help me in any future job I enter- the ability to communicate in a professional manner etc.
The Company
The office as a whole was relatively quiet, however, I was lucky enough to be part of the indirect tax team, which was much smaller, and so talked a lot more, and certainly had a lot of fun. People had to bring in cakes for various reasons, which certainly made the job a lot better! It was good to break up work with occasional conversations, and I felt I definitely got to know the whole team well.
The internship began with a residential, involving 3 nights stay, a team building exercise using Ipads, all meals included, well run inductions, and two particularly good evening meals, with free alcohol. I think the level of organisation here certainly set the scene for the rest of the internship. I was assigned both a people manager and a buddy, both of which knew their role, and were happy to help me on anything. Overall, I felt it was very well organised.
The first week of my six week internship involved no work, and was entirely dedicated to training and development. I feel that, given the amount of money spent on the residential, the staff it committed to the in-office training etc, the firm must have lost money on me over the internship. As such, I feel the firm really did invest in me, rather than just using me as cheap labour.

PwC is such a large organisation that the job prospects are very promising. I personally want to move office and role, and I am currently waiting to find out whether I will be successful in this. It does seem that PwC wants to keep us in firm following the placement, likely because of the amount they have invested in us. I feel the range of offices, and jobs undertaken in PwC mean the future employment prospects within the organisation are very appealing.
The Culture
One negative about my office is that it is in the middle of nowhere- it's not in a city, so there are no real locations people can go after work. Despite this, social events are organised in office, such as the new joiners quiz, and I was taken out for a meal with my team on my first day. I've also heard there's a black tie office Christmas party every year. There are also 'away days' every few months for each team, I didn't get to experience one, but I've heard they are very good. Overall, given the location, the social scene is surprisingly good.
I lived at home, and as stated above the locations for socialising weren't great in my area. However, I do know that living costs and pubs etc. are relatively cheap in this area.
The nightlife was effectively non-existent, but I was used to this given that I'd grown up in this area.
As stated above, during my internship there weren't too many such opportunities. However, the away days, Christmas parties, etc are supposedly very good, and I am sad to have missed them. Some of the other interns I know have taken part in activities such as a day at the cricket, and my team are currently organising an 'escape room' event for later this year.
