The Role
I enjoyed the internship to a great degree – I felt that the support and coaching we received, for both technical skills such as different excel functions and use of the audit software, as well as communicative skills like how to meet with the client and document the discussion, was very helpful.
I felt fairly valued by my colleague, and was given a decent amount of tasks to complete that made me feel like I was contributing to the engagement, especially when I was asked to meet with the client regarding analytical reviews and helping with the planning portion of the engagement.
I was given a significant amount of coaching and guidance throughout each engagement by a senior, which I found very helpful in completing the tasks I was assigned. The coaching and guidance ranged from both technical capabilities and use of the Aura software, to relationship and interpersonal skills like communicating wit the client.
There were certain days where I was quite busy, having been given a significant list of tasks for the day and was expected to complete them in a timely manner with a fixed deadline. There were also days where the in charge found it difficult to find me appropriate tasks to do, but such days were few.
I was given a decent amount of responsibility during each engagement for someone at the intern level, and was trusted with both small and larger tasks such as communicating questions regarding movements in the balance sheet to the client. I was also provided adequate support in this aspect of communication.
The skills I obtained, which included communication skills such as articulating complex ideas concisely to another person, and technical skills such as various excel functions, will definitely aid my future endeavours in both uni and career. I have also gained confidence in interacting with a diverse range of people in the finance world.
The Company
I found the general atmosphere at the office a bit quiet but very supportive in terms of coaching and pastoral support, where many of the current associates could empathise with any concerns we had. The office seemed like it knew how to have fun while also balancing multiple engagements as a team.
The overall internship was initially organised a bit poorly as interns were unable to access a variety of necessary functions such as checking our bookings portal called TalentLink, which meant we were unaware of what we were doing each day and where we were meant to be until the day of.
I believe the firm invested a significant amounts into us interns, providing both monetary investment such as training and induction, and travel reimbursements, as well as timely investment involving coaching and guidance. We felt valued and consequently aimed to perform as well as possible in order to fulfil our objectives.
National Travel
Future employment prospects are both appealing and a bit unappealing because though the work was for the most part engaging, many aspects felt a bit dull especially considering the tasks given to interns were mostly of low priority. However, I realise the internship tasks are not exactly reflective of future employment.
The Culture
The firm placed a decent amount of emphasis on organising social gatherings.
Cost of living was quite high, which made it difficult.
Nightlife was decent, but did not really participate in it fully.
Yes, the firm provided numerous opportunities for activities outside work.
