The Role
This was a very rewarding placement on which I will look back with enjoyment. The range of skills covered in audit, technical systems, client work and interaction with other members of PwC were excellent. I felt challenged by the work at times, but as challenges are important to me, this made it more worthwhile.
The people were one of the most positive aspects of the placement. I was given a lot of responsibility at times, which made me feel as though my teams genuinely valued my ability & wanted me to make a good contribution which would reduce the workload for others. My mentor and buddy, but also many others in the office, regularly checked in to see how I was doing, both on- and off-client sites. People had the right balance between explaining things patiently and expecting us to complete the work in a responsible fashion.
Regular feedback sessions with in-charges - different for each client, which gives great opportunity for diversity. Review process on work completed ensures that development points followed up quickly. A great pastoral system in place with Buddy and People Manager meant people were always willing to help and check in on how I was doing.
For most of the placement I was given the right number of tasks to fill the contracted hours. At times there was less to do, mainly at the start of an audit but I used this time proactively to work on e-learns and catch-up with emails. At other times a lot of responsibility was given and I worked longer than the contracted hours to iron out issues with my work.
I was surprised and pleased at the amount of responsibility we were given as interns. Whilst the in-charges were always friendly and willing to go through things a second time, we were expected to complete tasks which grew in complexity as the weeks progressed - which was possible as we were able to develop skills. I took personal responsibility for a few areas of an audit which involved arranging several client meetings, and reporting back my progress to team leaders - but only after I had had to exercise my judgement in these meetings,
I honestly couldn't recommend the internship enough in terms of skills development. I feel I have covered so much and learnt an awful lot over the 6 weeks. I could genuinely envisage training others at a very basic level on some of the platforms on which we have worked, such has been the rate of technical skills development. I also used client systems on a regular basis. Some are company specific, but others, like use of Excel, are vital for many jobs in this industry. Working with such a range of people - due to being placed on different client sites with different teams - has perceptibly increased my ability to communicate with others and adapt depending on others' approach - an invaluable skill for all walks of life.
The Company
The atmosphere is fairly relaxed, particularly in the summer. On tough audits, it can be quite intense in terms of time pressure and this depends on the client. The 'dress-down Fridays' and regular socials created a good vibe in the office. People of different pay scales are, relatively speaking, interspersed together, so it is easy to form relationships.
Very well organised. Initial training is intense but well-coordinated at an off-site residential. there is also induction training at the offices. We had regular contact from the national internship organisers with updates and reminders. Different systems are available for submitting feedback, submitting time and expenses, working at home etc. which made integration very easy.
A very great deal. The residential programme must have been expensive but certainly helped our induction to the programme. Pay rate is very good for an internship, and there is clear evidence of skills development in the way that we develop across the internship.
National Travel
Should you secure an internship, and perform well, you have a good chance of obtaining an offer. You need to stay on top of your work and feedback throughout and ask plenty of questions, both to build a good relationship with in-charges and so that you can improve and really understand the work you are doing.
The Culture
The other interns were friendly and welcome and there are also business placement 西瓜视频s (on a sandwich year) who are good people to interact with - as you'll likely have the same experience as them next year. People are all in the same boat and rooting for each other rather than competing on a cut-throat basis. There isn't that much interaction with other interns on a working basis as you tend to all be placed at different client sites.
It's generally O.K. in Leeds considering that given the growth of the financial sector payscales across the city in general are pretty good.
I hear it's pretty good in Leeds, but I didn't really get to sample it that much as I had a long commute by public transport!
Friday night socials on a regular basis - e.g. cricket Sports Day at the end of the internship Social teams/group captains clearly put a lot of effort into making these (subsidised) events work and went to an effort to ensure all the interns were included.
