The Role
The PwC internship was an enjoyable and worthwhile experience. I've definitely developed a lot of skills and gained great industry experience. It is, however, hard work and very challenging. This is clearly to be expected when starting work in a new job but it can make some tasks a struggle at times.
The people were one of the best things about PwC. Everyone was really friendly and happy to help. There were also lots of opportunities to socialise outside of work with after work drinks and cricket matches. I was also invited to the annual summer ball which was a really enjoyable experience.
This really depended on who the manager of the particular job you were on was and how busy they were. For example, towards the end of an audit, managers and team members were often really busy and it was quite hard to find help. However, the majority of the time, all colleagues were happy to help and offered as much support as they could.
The hours worked were as expected from a top 4 firm (roughly 8.45-6/6.30 when at a client site). With regard to the actual work, it varied a lot from simple things like matching invoices and bank statements to much more difficult things. This can be overwhelming with no prior knowledge on the subject but colleagues were usually very good at coaching through any unfamiliar tasks
The level of responsibility was the same of a first or second year employee studying the ACA. This involved testing different parts within the audit as well as speaking to the clients at their offices to gather evidence. Again, this was all completed with the help of more senior team members so it was too scary!
There are a lot of really useful transferable skills that are developed over the 6 weeks. This includes simple things like keyboard shortcuts and excel skills to using the specialised software in auditing and companies house. Even if you're not certain assurance is for you, the skills developed make the internship a really valuable step towards a career in finance.
The Company
The atmosphere was good in the office with an open plan office space and managers and interns working in the same room. It operated on a hot desk system meaning there was an opportunity to meet lots of different people as well. There was also a nice area on the second floor for lunch and drinks in between working.
The organisation was generally good. There was a 3 day residential induction that was a really good way of meeting other interns whilst learning the basics of the job. However, there were a few issues with finding client jobs for all of the interns at the beginning but this was resolved after the first couple of weeks.
Investment in your development is a great aspect of an internship at PwC. A lot of time is taken at the beginning to give you basic training as well as training days throughout. Colleagues also take a lot of time to coach you through tasks and the firm provides you with all of the IUT equipment you may need.
