The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed my time at PwC. It was better than I expected. I gained a great deal of skill, knowledge and confidence in the field.
Everyone treated me with respect and like I was a full-time employee of the firm. They gave me challenging work that I appreciated and were very patient when I did not understand things.
My seniors were very helpful with coaching and always had time to answer my questions.
I had a constant flow of work to do which I was grateful for.
Some tasks required me to use my own judgement to make decisions. And others I was in charge of myself for the task. I was encouraged to speak with the client on my own when I was comfortable. At one point, I was asked to complete some work on the client's payroll which required me to sit in the HR department, using their system and interacting with them on my own. I was not expecting this level of responsibility and I really appreciated it.
I do an Accounting and Finance degree, so everything I learned on my placement was invaluable and will especially help in my audit module next year. I feel that actually working in the industry has helped me see what I am learning in action, and therefore will make the learning easier to grasp and hopefully improve my grades by a great deal!
The Company
The atmosphere in my office was amazing. It was relaxed and friendly; everybody was willing to answer any of my questions and coach me through it. I felt like I could approach anyone, especially due to the open plan of the office desks. The Norwich office doesn't have a set desk plan, giving you the opportunity to sit next to new people to create and build on new relationships, which is great for increasing your network.
I felt that the placement was very well organised. I was always aware of what I was doing and supposed to be doing, and what was expected of me. There was a set schedule as to when meetings and feedback was meant to be gathered and done which helped me organise myself.
At the beginning of the internship, we were invited to Windsor for a 3-day training course. All expenses were paid, including travel, food, and hotel. The entire time was an amazing experience. With training during the day and socialising during the evening. Once at my designated office, there was a constant stream of coaching. Also, I was given E-Learns to complete to supplement my knowledge.
I have not yet had my meeting on whether I will be offered a job or not, but should I be offered one I will definitely be accepting it, my time here has made me even more eager to work for PwC on their graduate scheme, and I really hope and offer is made to me in my exit interview.
The Culture
This is one thing that was lacking from my end. However, Norwich is one of the smallest firms so there was only 2 of us interns. We already knew each other as we went to the same uni doing the same course, too. I feel like my view of this would not be representative of the firm.
Norwich is a very cheap place to live. I also study in Norwich at the University of East Anglia and pay rent of 拢240 a month for a decent home sharing with 3 other people. Norwich is also known for it's super cheap taxi fares compared to other cities, which is a bonus.
Norwich has a large amount of clubs, bars, and pubs. There is a particular road that holds most of Norwich's nightlife that comes to life every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There are many places to choose from to meet all tastes, and in my opinion is a very safe place to experience night life.
Sadly not, as the internship spans a very short space of time. This is understandable. Talking to some of the people on the graduate scheme assured me that there are such opportunities in place, but the summer tends to be a quieter time with most people taking holiday. Another employee I worked closely with did indicate that the employees often go out to a club on a Friday night together, too.
