The Role
I did my Internship in Assurance in the Edinburgh office and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Having gone back to uni for my final year now, I do miss my colleagues, my fellow Interns and the Office. I look forward to joining the company again, but this time as a graduate in September.
Straight from the first day, I felt as an equal member of the team. I was included in all of the social activities planned for the whole office (drinks at the office, Fringe festival show, Sports half day and barbeque) and for the individual team I was working more closely with (team breakfasts/lunches). I am still in touch with some of my fellow PwC colleagues.
Every Intern is allocated a Buddy (an employee who has been with the company for one or two years) who is there to help them with any questions they may have really and a Peoples Manager who is responsible for their career development. Both my buddy and my peoples manager were extremely helpful. My buddy was my go-to person for questions like - how to print, who should I speak to if I am facing this problem, etc. And my Peoples manager went beyond and over to help me achieve my goals (which every Intern sets at the beginning of their Internship).
I was given enough work to keep me busy for a 7.5 hour work day. However, I volunteered for extra work and extra meetings which meant that I had to stay later than 18:00 some days. I also took part in the Dragon's Den Challenge (which was not compulsory and) which meant extra workload. However, I still had enough time for a healthy work/life balance.
I was given meaningful work and even though my work was overseen in the beginning when I was not very confident in my audit skills, by the end of my placement I was given more advanced pieces of work and I was trusted to complete that to a high standard and on time. Also, some of the research I did on a project I volunteered to do was later used in the presentation for a pitch.
The Company
The PwC Edinburgh office is really colourful (in the brand colours of Red, Yellow and Orange) which brings a very friendly, relaxed and positive atmosphere (especially when it is grey and rainy outside which is quite often in Scotland). Everyone seemed very friendly and willing to help. It seemed that people are quiet good friends outside of the office as well, which contributed to the famaily-like feeling the office had.
The Internship was very well-structured. It started with 3 day UK-wide Induction in Winsdor (close to London) packed with Team Building exercises, Networking opportunities, lots of free food and crash course on Accounting. This was followed by a 2 day Office Induction where we were told how to use the PwC systems/software and we were introduced to key individuals in the office. Our Internship concluded by a day in London where the finalists in the Dragons' Den Challenge got to present their projects.
Company Parties/Events
I would love to join the company as a graduate next year. I really felt like I fit in well with the company culture and absolutely enjoyed my six weeks with PwC. I did manage to speak to a wide range of people from different levels and departments during my placements which gave me the reassurance that a career with the company will be one of the best career paths I can take.
The Culture
I got along very well with my fellow Interns. We would regularly hang out together after work and over the weekends - Climbing Arthur Seat, going to the Pub on Friday night, etc, etc. And I stayed good friends with the majority of them. We have a facebook group together where we catch up and also we snapchat regularly.
The prices in Edinburgh are not as high as those in London, so I would say the standard of living that I could afford with my PwC Intern Salary was more than satisfactory. The town was more expensive than usual, because I was in the August intake which is when the Fringe Festival takes place which meant that there were many tourists and thus the prices were higher than usual.
