The Role
I found that I had a large amount of responsibility and the task I carried out were extremely varied. I enjoyed that I got to try out different sectors and I felt that the work I was carrying out was useful. There were also lots of social opportunities and meeting the other interns at the start of the programme was a good introduction.
I felt that as my confidence grew, I was able to speak up more about my thoughts and I felt that these were taken on board by colleagues. There was a good team spirit on the projects I worked on and overall the atmosphere was welcoming and friendly. I felt trusted and respected.
I found that overall management were supportive and aware of your position as an intern. I felt the People Manager scheme was well targeted and it opened up more senior levels of contact I could turn to. When working in groups, I found it easy to communicate if I was struggling.
This fluctuated greatly, although I appreciate that this was largely due to the time of year. Some days I had too little work and struggled for resourcing, however once placed on a project I found that I didn't even notice time passing as I was enjoying the work so much. Working hours were very project dependent, however again this is the nature of the work.
I felt I was given a very manageable level of responsibility, which gradually increased as I gained experience and trust from my colleagues. I think my workload was fair and wouldn't have had an issue communicating if I found it difficult or too demanding. I enjoyed that my work was impactful to the project and that I got to access client meetings.
I think that the training I received was excellent. Not only did we have a week long introduction in to strategy, there were lots of free online training courses which I managed to complete during my time there, as well as talks and updates by different members of the team. I also improved my software skills, and even learnt how to use new software programs.
The Company
There was a definite work hard, play hard vibe. When work needed doing, everyone knuckled down to meet the deadline, but overall it was fairly relaxed - as long as the work was getting done. The hot-desking aspect was good as you got to meet new people, and it helped when working in a team on a project.
The M&A strategy internship was slightly different to the others offered, lasting 10 weeks rather than 6 or 8, and so sometimes it felt a bit like we had been forgotten as many of the events were tailored to those on other placements. However, we were always invited to all events, and the residential and induction were extremely well planned and thought out.
There were lots of free courses online we could complete to develop our understanding of software. The induction was extensive and I felt I learned a lot in a week, putting me in good stead to begin working on the floor. The personal development aspect was well thought out, and regular meetings with our people manager and setting our own targets was a good way to track this.
Company Parties/Events
The Culture
There was a good variety of social events and they offered a good opportunity to catch up with other interns in the office and to socialise with colleagues outside of work. I found this a rewarding part of the internship as it helped improve the atmosphere in the office.
London and so as expected fairly expensive.
London has brilliant nightlife opportunities.
There were lots of sports and social clubs advertised. It seemed that if you were keen enough it was easy to get involved.
