About You
I very much enjoyed my insight week into PwC on their Women in Business programme as it gave me good business insight into what it would be like to work in a more senior role with PwC and what it will take to get to that senior role. I was also put on client projects also so that gave me insight into the type of work I would be doing on a daily basis.
I felt really valued within the team I was working for, they all made me feel very welcome and valued. They always offered for me to join them out on their coffee breaks or team lunches which made me feel like I could fit into the company and the people who work for PwC.
I felt like I was given sufficient support and guidance. I was given enough guidance to do daily tasks, but I wasn't just spoon-fed on how to do tasks because otherwise that would be too easy and I wouldn't learn anything from that.
The placement made me more confident and made me realise that I need to believe in my own work. I also managed to develop more of my communication and listening skills, which will come in handy for future work placements and interviews to come.
The Company
The week was well planned out by my leader as I knew what the general plan was going to be every day (i.e what building I was in, what meetings I was attending, what tasks I needed to complete). There was always something for me to do everyday in my role even if I thought I had finished all my tasks I could do that day.
Everybody seems very happy everyday at PwC. Upon speaking to a range of different people in different roles (senior associates, managers, directors and partners), everybody told me that they loved their jobs and they always look forward to come into work everyday. All the employees were very friendly and professional with one another which made it feel like a well run and high-calibre workplace.
They used my skills to complete certain client projects everyday, which meant that they were trusting me to produce a high quality piece of work for them every time. They also gave me my own laptop for the week to work on which made me feel like they were investing their valuable time on their interns. My leader who I shadowed for the week let me sit in all her meetings (between colleagues at PwC and clients).
My specific role on my placement helped me to understand what it would be like to be a more senior member of the company (senior associate up to partner). However, it didn't help me get much information on what it would be like to be a graduate which I would be for my first three years of joining the firm. So maybe this programme needs to be more tailored towards showing the more graduate side of the role as opposed to the partner/director side of the role.
Even though I was only there for one week, I managed to grasp within the first few days what the company culture was like and how the daily operations occur at the business everyday. The fact I asked lots of different employees questions on what the culture and environment is like at PwC also helped me gain insight into what the culture is like there.
The ranging projects from helping out fellow colleagues, shadowing client meetings and getting to work with a partner at the company, I feel it made me decide that this is the career path I want to take as they will offer a very unique and fantastic career. Completing the week placement with PwC confirmed my desire to work for them by seeing what the daily operations are like there.
Everything Else
I was paid around 拢9.40 an hour (for a 35 hour week) for this experience, so I earned just under 拢330 in total for the week which I feel was very reasonable. I was not reimbursed for expenses such as travelling to the office everyday and buying lunches.
Yes there are many opportunities to meet other employees of the company such as through sports or aerobics classes. Other opportunities to meet other employees include networking nights and helping to run 西瓜视频 recruitment events at universities around the UK.
I didn't get to experience much of the networking or social events because I was only there for one week unfortunately. If I had completed the 6 week internship I may have had more opportunity to participate in networking events with the company and meet more fellow interns and associates.
I found out that the company run sports clubs (e.g tennis) and other fitness classes such as aerobics classes which is always a good way to meet other employees who work in other sectors of the company. The employees I spoke to said they regularly take part in sports activities because it's enjoyable and you get to make new work friends.
Definitely. If you haven't got time to complete the whole 6 week internship scheme and still want a paid work experience then I would definitely recommend this insight week. This insight week can also be done in any year during university (including first year).
