About You
I enjoyed the insight quite much because there was a lot to learn from. As I am on a programme where I shadow a female leader in a specific sector, I usually follow the leader to her meetings and listen to the discussion, take some notes, and go to the next one (since the leader is quite busy). Other times I review reports and compile some statistical data for any issues in grammar and clarity. I enjoyed learning about the process of how things were organized and put together, and the steps towards completing a project. However, I felt that I didn't have a lot of hands on opportunity to contribute (since most of the activity I was engaged in was listening on meetings and reading reports) as compared to some of the other internships that I've done.
The firm has treated me very well from the first day, and the atmosphere is very welcoming. When I have questions, they were answered well. When I asked for work to do, my leader would try to think of something that I can work on and let me do it, but maybe because they didn't really have things that were suitable for a newcomer to work on during the week of my insight, I didn't really have the opportunity to work on tangible things. But when I did work on a task, the instructions were quite thorough and I felt welcomed.
When I go to work on a task, I received a lot of guidance and support on what I had to do. For example, when I was compiling data, I was specifically told the format and specific information that I had to include, and how to derive them. As for reviewing reports, since that's pretty straightforward, it didn't really require a lot of guidance, but when I had questions about the report, they were answered well, so I felt supported.
At the moment it's only been less than a month since I've completed my insight so it's not very obvious how the skills I've developed has impacted my life, but I think that they will definitely help in the near future, when I do get some assignments and work kicking in. Examples will be more efficient reading (I've had to review a 136 paged report in a day) and better excel skills. However, because an insight is relatively short, and because I didn't really have the opportunity to work on hands-on tasks, I feel that I've learnt more transferable skills in some of my previous internships. But working in such a diverse firm definitely broadened my view of the potential opportunities that I have in the future, which will assist me in my career planning.
The Company
From my experience, I would say the insight did not have a particularly definite structure, because every task that I worked on was quite spontaneous and not pre-planned. I was often introduced to a task the day before, or just hours before the task, but seeing that an insight is relatively short, it is understandable that it wouldn't be very well planned. There wasn't any particular training because I was shadowing, but I did have something to work on everyday (albeit sometimes not for the entire day). Overall, I think the structure can be improved, as I felt it was quite loose.
The general atmosphere was great. Everyone was very friendly to me, and there were fun times. I felt very welcomed, and there were some social events in the firm which really showed its diversity and culture, such as a snacks/drink event themed around delicacies around the world. When I talked to some of the current employees, they were happy to share their experience and how they felt about their work, which allowed me to learn a lot about the culture of the firm. During work, the atmosphere was also usually friendly, even though it's quite rigorous.
As I've previously mentioned, there wasn't any training provided, seeing as this is an insight programme where you just shadow a female leader. The leader is quite busy, so she won't have a lot of time to provide training to you. I don't think the firm invested in me to a very large extent, but having the opportunity to gain some insight into the operation of the firm is already a form of investment to me, because it allows me to better understand the particular industry (in this case, professional services), and how it works to provide the best services to its clients.
As I've said in my previous comments, I didn't have a lot of hands-on opportunities, so I'm not very sure about how a full time role would be like, in terms of what the tasks would be like, and how would the issues be handled. However, I did observe how some of the current employees are working, and most of all, my leader's responsibilities and how she works, along with some of the other employees under her responsibility. This provided me a general idea about what a full time role is responsible for, and that is already quite valuable for me.
The insight helped me in understanding the company culture quite well. Although it's only been a week, I felt that through observing meetings and working with some of the employees, I did get a much better understanding of the company culture. The employees have all demonstrated the core values of the company, and in addition to that, the atmosphere is generally friendly (towards newcomers at least). I enjoyed the company culture very much, but I'm not sure what it's like for an internship or full time role, since I didn't have enough time to gain a deeper understanding.
The content of the day is definitely valuable, but since I didn't have a lot of hands-on experience and learned mainly from observing other people and their work, the information I received about this sector is not incredibly useful in helping me decide on my future career. However, I still gained some insight about this sector and the type of work that they do for their clients from the projects that I did get to participate in, and that has helped me decide on my future career path.
Everything Else
Please note that the pay comes after a tax (at least for me it did), so it isn't necessarily the exact number that you are promised on the offer letter. I didn't have any expenses to be reimbursed for, and travel from your accommodation to office is not reimbursed.
There were great opportunities for networking and meeting other employees. I was invited to a breakfast with the team that my leader was in charge of, and also the 'food around the world' social event which was on my floor of the office. You also have access to their local website, where there are posts of employees sharing their daily life, and that's quite insightful.
The networking and social events are great. It was really nice to chat with some of the employees and learn about how they find their work, what they enjoy and what they don't, along with how their daily life is. I was very impressed at the diversity in the firm, and people were very enthusiastic to share their experience with me, which made me feel very welcomed.
I did, but unfortunately not through this insight. I've attended an open day before the insight (which has been quite helpful) and through that I learnt that employees can go for a volunteering programme during their holidays, which is quite thoughtful. Other than that, I am not entirely sure about other activities that employees can get involved in outside of work.
Yes, I would recommend it to a friend who is interested in going into this field. It provides a good picture of the industry and the working conditions, as well as the structure and culture of the company. Although the structure is a bit loose and there weren't a lot of hands-on tasks, there are still opportunities to learn from attending meetings (sometimes with clients over the telephone), reading reports, and organizing data.
