About You
I was given immediate responsibility and I was treated as a member of the team from the beginning. My contributions were valued and support was available and accessible from peers and managers.
I felt valued right from the beginning. Due to the nature of the project, the entire team had to start at the same level to learn about a complicated industry. This meant that despite the fact that I had significantly less experience than other members of the team, it felt very much like a team effort and all my contributions were listened to and valued.
Most of my interaction was with other associates but I was able to get useful actionable feedback at several points from my managers.
As I start the graduate position, I will be in a great place to hit the ground running. I know what the pace is like and I understand the analytical and research aspects of the job.
The Company
After a two day induction I was staffed full time on a project.
I was surrounded by very intelligent, welcoming colleagues, who made my start to work very smooth.
For a three week placement, we had two days of residential training. The first day was more relevant to the whole PwC Experience but the second day was tailored and delivered by the Strategy Team. As the internship was short, there wasn鈥檛 much time for continual development training, but there was regular feedback and objective setting.
Whilst I was on the insight, I was treated exactly like an Associate from day 1. I was staffed on a project as soon as I finished the induction residential and this continued throughout the insight. I had exactly the same role and responsibilities as the other Associate on my team and the expectations of me were aligned with those of any other Associate.
By being staffed on a live project, my experience was how the company runs and feels day to day. It is a very work hard, play hard atmosphere but there was certainly a culture of valued contribution and it was very non hierarchical. Whilst there was an element of staying till the job is done, staying later than office hours felt appreciated and valued.
From the experience, I definitely realised that Strategy Consulting was as I expected and is the right next step for me. I was invited to breakfasts involving more senior team members describing their career paths, doing an MBA for example. This opened my eyes to the potential career path later down the line.
Everything Else
I was paid in accordance with the salary of a graduate Associate, which was very competitive. Expenses incurred by staying late for dinner and getting a taxi home (if it was a late finish) were paid for and easy to apply for.
I was very lucky to have a contact who already worked within the team. This meant that as well as the weekly breakfast meetings, I had the opportunity to go to a leaving do for a colleague who was off to do an MBA, and also a Technology Team party hosted by one of the Partners. This made it very easy to meet other employees of the firm.
The networking opportunities were great: Weekly breakfast meetings had different senior members of the team discussing the new interesting work they were getting involved with, what the MBA experience was like and other topics. After work drinks were also great. If you were lucky, the partners would put their cards behind the bar!
The team I worked in works very hard, so there is understandably little time during the week for activities. However, there was talk about sports facilities and gym membership that different colleagues would use.
For me, this insight gave me the opportunity to break into a very competitive industry. On top of that, I was able to get a strong idea of whether I would be a good fit in the workplace and with the colleagues I met. The opportunities available at the firm were made clear and I was able to meet people at all levels of seniority within the team who were all very welcoming and interested in what we were doing.
