    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I really enjoyed the insight. The people were all very welcoming and keen to answer and encourage any questions. I felt that I had the opportunity to see the reality of working life from a variety of different levels and perspectives. People within the office were keen to show me interesting tasks and ensure I understood as much as possible.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt very valued during my time at the company. I never had a lunchtime where I did not have plans and people were always very keen to introduce me to their work colleagues to ensure I felt comfortable and known in the office. I also regularly received emails telling me of interesting upcoming calls or tasks from colleagues with whom I had no formal contact.

    5/5

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • I received a large amount of support in the insight. We all received IT support on the first morning and, during my time in the office, I felt that I was able to ask questions without fear of embarrassment or being seen as annoying. Before and after every call or meeting I sat in on, we would have a conversation about the background of the task and I had the opportunity to ask any questions to really understand it.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Although I do not believe that the skills developed are particularly relevant to my degree, I strongly believe that the information I received will help me with choosing a future career path. I had the opportunity to talk through my current thoughts with people who had been in similar positions and got their perspectives on the differences between the careers I was considering. I also learnt the importance of asking questions and feel more confident about going into future work placements.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • I thought the insight was very well structured. I was given advance notice of the day where I would be off-site and I always knew where I was expected to be and at what time. The choice to split the shadowing between two different colleagues was also very effective as it gave the opportunity to experience contrasting sides of the work. My one negative about the insight was that it may have been beneficial to have a more formal debrief at the end, but I may have missed out on this due to cutting my insight week short by one day.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The atmosphere was really positive. I was given the impression that everyone was keen to have me in the department and wanted to show how interesting and diverse the work could be. I never felt stupid asking questions and people seemed to welcome my contribution. This atmosphere was true of both the introduction session, the week spent in the office and the fast debrief response after the insight week.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Considering it was only an insight week, I felt PwC's personal training was very thorough. We all had an IT training session on the first morning and I felt very comfortable using the technology from then onwards. I also felt that the firm was very strong in terms of development. Since the internship, I have had multiple phone calls about the next potential steps.

    4/5

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • I felt that I had a really good sense of what it would be like to have a full-time role. I was able to shadow two different women at different levels within the department to get a sense of how the work could differ as you moved up the firm. I was also able to attend a training day for new graduate recruits to get an idea of the transition process.

    4/5

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • I really felt that the insight week helped me to understand the company culture, both in terms of the official professional culture and also the day-to-day working culture. I was able to attend some sessions focussing on the management of the firm and review the materials, giving me the opportunity to understand the ethos of the firm. I also had plenty of opportunities to socialise with members of the team and understand their perspective on the culture.

    4/5

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • I found the insight invaluable in terms of deciding upon my future career. I knew very little about what a career in tax would entail before this placement and it is now something that I would definitely consider. I also felt that this wasn't pushed upon me and I was able to discuss my other career ideas and get perspectives on the overlaps and differences of alternative career paths.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • I was paid 拢300 for the week experience. Travel expenses to the office were not included, but expenses between offices in London were included. I was also taken out for lunch every day of the insight week, but I am not sure if this is standard for all employees.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • I had plenty of opportunities to network and meet other employees, but mainly employees within the tax department. I was able to attend networking drinks on the second day and talk to a variety of different employees about their perspectives. It was also made clear to me that if I wanted to meet employees from different departments, this could probably have been arranged.

    4/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • The networking and social opportunities were quite good. I spent a lot of time with the two women I shadowed and they were very keen to introduce me to a wide variety of people within the department. I felt that it may have been useful to have an opportunity to network with people outside of your immediate department, but I understand that this is difficult to arrange due to the time restraints.

    3/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • I asked lots of questions about the social life outside of our work. I heard a lot of information about the upcoming ski trip and also the sports teams. Overall, I got the sense that although there were a number of company-wide events, on the whole teams socialised within themselves more and therefore it is difficult to get an idea of the activities firm-wide.

    4/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • I would very much recommend this insight to a friend. The employees seemed really keen to show me as much as possible and were extremely welcoming. I was given real work to do and never made to feel like a hindrance. I have also received a lot of support subsequent to this insight week.
