About You
I thoroughly enjoyed my insight week. Everyone I met was incredibly friendly and helpful and I gained so much from my experience. The exposure to the company was invaluable. Shadowing a senior member of staff gave me the opportunity to meet people from all areas of the business and network with senior members of staff in client organisations as well.
I was entrusted with important tasks that made me feel like I had a purpose, rather than simply being there to shadow someone. I got the impressions that they really value every employee, regardless of their position. Everyone seemed proud of what they do. The exposure I was given to clients mad me feel like I was actively involved in the processes taking place.
The partner I was shadowing was excellent. Whilst I was expected to use my initiative, she welcomed and encouraged my questions and everyone I spoke to offered their helps should I want it. I had enough support to make me feel comfortable, but I was still able to operate independently; I didn't feel 'babysat'. Staff also offered their help and support for after my placement.
Shadowing a partner taught me how to negotiate with people and behave when around clients. It helped me develop my communication skills and boosted my confidence. I also got to practice writing reports and practice working with spreadsheets, as well as developing my research skills. All of these will be useful in my degree studies and in my career.
The Company
I had a clear idea of what I was doing each day. There was some unpredictability, but that only added to the experience. I had a clear start and end time each day, and everyone made sure I knew where I was expected to be and when. I enjoyed going out to client sites and sitting in on meetings which were all, of course, well organised.
Everyone was incredibly friendly and spoke very highly of the firm. The atmosphere was very welcoming and positive. I got the impression that everyone was there because they wanted to be and were proud of working there. I was never made to feel uncomfortable or out of place. There appeared to be strong working relationships between colleagues across all management levels.
I was given similar responsibilities to current entry level employees and spent time working with different teams to really understand the work. I was even taken out to lunch by a team so they could share their experiences with me. I was encouraged to ask questions about the day-to-day responsibilities within the firm.
Whilst on the insight programme I got to clearly experience the firms core values. Working in a major office gave me great exposure to the company culture and the opinions of people I spoke to reinforced the positive impression I was getting. By going out to clients I got to see how the firm puts their core values into practice.
Everything Else
I was given plenty of opportunities to talk to members of the firm at length. Whenever I was unable to attend a certain meeting or event for legal reasons, there was always someone for me to talk to about their experiences and views of the firm, happy to answer any questions I had. I also got to network with professionals in senior roles within client firms which was an excellent opportunity.
It was evident throughout my insight programme that the firm offers lots of enrichment and that there's a strong focus on work-life balance. People I spoke to praised the firms attitude towards out-of-work activities and it was evident from displays in the office that developing your interests is encouraged. There also appeared to be a wide range of company-sponsored activities on offer.
I would absolutely recommend this insight to anyone considering it. It's a fantastic opportunity the experience the firm and network with people. It's a great way to see if the firm is right for you, and to experience a service-line before you fully commit to it. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience.
