The Role
My placement year was very enjoyable, with a variety of jobs and locations ensuring it rarely got dull. I found it a very sociable firm to do a placement with due to there being large numbers of people on graduate schemes who were mainly of a similar age.
In the Cardiff office I noticed a quite close atmosphere where managers and directors were very approachable and would sometimes come over for a chat. I therefore felt that I was a genuine asset to the firm. If you are working with people from other offices you may never see them again and so in these rare situations you may not get the same camaraderie.
There was extensive training at the start, partly due to it being a highly regulated industry. However, most of the learning was done on the job. You are sometimes expected to use a bit of intuition, but there is always someone to contact to help.
Some days were very busy, especially in weeks leading up to exams where you would often be working in the day and revising in the evenings. I very rarely had little to do though which meant days went quickly. Some periods of the year can get quieter which is nice to balance out the busier days.
Firstly, a placement year in PwC Assurance is essentially the first year of the graduate scheme. You take college, training and exams with the graduates and are treated exactly the same. You are also assigned certain areas of an audit and so you are trusted with quite a lot of responsibility.
I do a Maths degree and so learning accounting hasn't particularly helped in that sense. However, I did get the opportunity to work in Data Assurance for a few weeks which has taught me some programming skills, which I will do more of when I return to university. The skills I have learned in accounting will be very useful for post uni.
The Company
On the whole, people are approachable and easy to talk to.
It was set up very well before joining and one I joined I mainly followed the graduate programme. However, sometimes people were unsure about placement specific issues as there are far more graduate 西瓜视频s.
PwC paid for me complete 7 ACA exams, which is fantastic for an 11 month placement. They also invested in a lot of training weeks for us and the graduates.
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
It was clear for day one that if you are half decent at your job and can pass your exams, PwC will want you to come back after the placement on the grad scheme. Both myself and the other placement 西瓜视频 in Cardiff were offered to return. Given, that it is one of the best grad schemes in terms of employment prospects, this is a great opportunity.
The Culture
Every month the social budget was used to take the office out for drinks together. It was also used for a christmas ball and summer ball. I got on very well with the new graduate intake and so we had many events outside of work. There were also free events such as boat parties and paint balling organised for all those studying for ACA. During exams or busy season, social events can be at a premium but on the whole it was pretty good.
Cheap living and standard socialising costs.
Excellent. Cardiff has plenty to offer for everyone.
I played a bit of football, and someone organised a half marathon team but apart from that there wasn't too much.
