    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • This internship was very enjoyable and I am extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity to get firsthand experience of assurance and work with clients. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting and building relationships with lots of people from the firm including colleagues, my buddy, managers and my people manager.as well as other interns. Not only has it strengthened my understanding of assurance and the audit process, in particular the testing stage, but the amount of responsibility given by working on client work meant that I was able to get invaluable insight and experience into the tasks that are involved. I have learnt so much about the audit process, in particular the planning and testing process, and have familiarised myself with the systems used to collate and document the audit work. My excel skills have developed significantly through this experience as I familiarised myself with its functions. I now appreciate its value and importance in performing and documenting the audit work. In addition, I have strengthened skills such as analytical, organisation, communication and team working. This has increased my confidence and interest in assurance as well as PwC, in particular the culture and working environment.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone at PwC was extremely friendly, approachable and always willing to help when I had queries and questions. I have enjoyed working and building relationships with my colleagues. They recognised my contribution and appreciated the amount of time and effort I put into the work which made me feel highly valued and helpful. The constructive feedback they provided on my performance helped me to develop myself and was useful in identifying my strengths and development areas to work on. PwC invests a lot in their people.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had a week of training which was intense but fun as I learnt a lot about the audit process and key topics such as materiality and risk. The tutors made these sessions fun, engaging and interesting by incorporating different activities and quizzes to consolidate my learning. I was given support and guidance on the job as well as the manager and my team members were always willing to help and answer my questions and queries. They encouraged me to ask questions and made sure I was comfortable with the work I was given. I also received support and guidance from my people manager through having regular meetings to discuss my progress and she helped me settle into the job. Having a buddy who was a recent graduate was really good as he shared his experience with me and gave me advice and help whenever I needed it. This increased my confidence and made me feel at ease with the work. I learnt a lot on the job and the first week doing client work was challenging but I was given adequate support throughout.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was very busy on most days particularly when I was at client site as there were a lot of tasks to complete within tight deadlines. Often I would finish later than expected due to the amount of work that needed to be completed. It was tiring at first as I was not used to doing full working days but it was also very rewarding as I have learnt a lot. The office environment is much more relaxed and I was more able to pace myself as there was less time pressure. I was busier when testing various financial statement line items as often there were a lot of samples to work through.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility, much more than expected, throughout the internship. I was put onto client work straight after the training week which meant that I had maximum exposure to the client and the engagement. All the tasks that I did contributed to the audit work so I felt that my work was being appreciated and valued. Furthermore, I was expected to manage my time efficiently, obtain feedback on my performance on a regular basis and complete all the necessary compliance and training tasks in my own time.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I study Accounting and Finance so the knowledge gained, skills developed and training received would be hugely beneficial and useful to me for my degree as well as my future career. In particular the knowledge gained on the audit process will assist me with my auditing module that I will be doing in my final year at university. The invaluable interpersonal and technical skills that I have developed during this internship, such as communication, team working and using excel, will be extremely helpful in my personal development. The experience I have gained will provide me with the confidence and knowledge to succeed in the workplace. I am extremely grateful to have been given this invaluable opportunity and have expanded my network.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was relaxed and the structure, such as hot desking, created an open and communicative environment. Even though everyone was busy with their work, they were always willing to help and friendly which created a warm and open environment. The office that I was in was a good size as it was not too big so I quickly met and built relationships with colleagues.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very organised as regular, weekly emails were sent which gave me updates, important messages regarding any compliance and training tasks I needed to complete as well as interesting news regarding the firm. It was very well structured as there was a residential induction and training week which gave me the fundamental knowledge of assurance before starting the client work. I was given lots of materials and useful booklets which helped me to familiarise with the systems and applications they used.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • PwC invested a lot in my personal development as I received training and their feedback process provided me with useful information regarding my main strengths and areas to improve. The e-learns and other training tasks I was given helped to consolidate my learning and prepare me for the client work. I felt that I have developed and grown a lot personally as a result.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The future employment prospects are appealing as there are plenty of opportunties to move around in the firm. For example, as you gain more experience you will get the opportunity to go on secondments to other countries. They have a good and transparent structure in terms of progression through the firm as there are many levels which are dependent on your performance and contribution to the firm.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • Yes, all the interns were very friendly and easy to get along with and talk to. I enjoyed meeting a lot of people and getting to know them better. There were a few events where we could network with the other interns and share our experiences such as during the induction week as well as during the last 2 days of the internship. It was really interesting to hear their experiences and the clients they have worked with. I wished there were more opportunities to talk to the other interns as we were all on different client work so we rarely saw one another during the internship.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living was good, the food in the area was affordable and at a reasonable price. The social aspect was fine, it was lively during the day although quieter in the evenings. There were not as many social events at the office I was in compared to other offices due to the area being far away from London.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife was ok, due to the long working days and the busy schedule of the job, I didn't have much time to explore the area so I don't know a lot about the nightlife there. The area that I worked in was more lively and busy during the day but it tended to be much quieter in the evenings.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were not many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work for the internship. However, through talking to the employees at the firm there are many societies that you can join at the firm as well as office events that are hosted every couple of months where you can meet everyone at your office and build relationships with them. Past events have included playing golf and balls.
