The Role
I really enjoyed my internship at PwC. The work was varied, the hours were good and I got a good taste of what working full time in the Data Assurance department would be like. There was a very supportive atmosphere in the office which encouraged me to ask questions and make the most of the opportunity.
I felt like a valued member of the team right from the beginning of my time at PwC. Working within a small team gave me the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with each person. They gave me interesting work and were happy to help me develop my skills throughout the internship.
At the start of the internship I was assigned a ‘buddy’ who is there to answer any questions that I had. I was also assigned a manager who held weekly meetings with me to make sure everything was going smoothly. My buddy was from within the team I was working with so was further involved in supporting me in my work. Whenever I wasn’t sure about what to do, I was given brilliant guidance.
Despite the summer being a quieter period of time for the business there was still plenty of work for me to complete. There was a good balance between meeting deadlines and being given time to learn to use new software however. When there was a lull in data specific work I was assigned to another team for a day which was good to expand my knowledge of the wider business operation.
I was given a good level of responsibility during my placement. I was responsible for delivering high quality work for important clients throughout my time here. There was a good balance of responsibility as all work is reviewed and so there was no risk of inexperience working against me! I was also allowed to attend meetings both within the firm and externally.
Working within the data assurance unit meant that I was working with a lot of software that I hadn’t come across before. Whilst the software itself won’t be applicable to my studies, the logic behind it will be. All training will be relevant for future studies and employment as it helped train my analytical skills as well as how to handle large data sets with ease.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was professional, yet relaxed. Everyone seemed to get along very well with their colleagues and everyone was easy to connect with. The office has a clear desk policy, meaning there are fresh faces around you every day which means you meet lots of new people.
The application process was very organised – we were kept informed of what step of the process we were at all through the application. During the internship itself there was a well-structured support system. There was a large residential induction event at the beginning which was well organised and provided the opportunity to meet interns from across the country.
The first 5 days of the internship were all focused on induction to the company and basic training. In my first couple of weeks in the office I received one-to-one training in the software we were using. Considering how quickly I could complete work at the end of the internship compared to the beginning, this was very effective! I was encouraged to work within different business units, and this helped develop my understanding of the wider firm.

The Culture
There were seven interns in my office in total and we formed close friendships in our time in PwC. We went for lunch together every day, and regularly met up in the evenings to do things around the city. This included everything from going for drinks to seeing shows at the Fringe festival to watching a rugby match.
As I study in the city my accommodation was the same price as usual. Some of my fellow interns had to pay very high rent due to the Fringe festival however. As a result of the festival, everything was more expensive than usual, although it also provided more opportunities to socialise.
