    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Having worked for another multinational company (non-audit) for 3 months before joining the firm, and spoken with others who worked for the other Big 4 firms, I can safely say that PwC offers a better industrial placement than most of its competitors. The reason being the friendly people I worked with, the numerous opportunities to learn about the different types of companies (eg retail, technology, legal etc.) and the general tone and direction of top management. The salary is also better than most other firms, bearing in mind that you are not yet a graduate.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Business placement 西瓜视频s are treated the same as first year associates, therefore you will be doing the same type of work as all your other peers in the same intake. As long as you listen to the advice from seniors and use common sense, you will be a valued member of the audit team.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • In terms of getting guidance on how to do your work on client site, there is a clear hierarchy within the audit team, and there is a firm-wide culture of seniors coaching junior staff. Although the level of coaching varies (depending on the style of the senior), they will always be able to give you some pointers. For personal support on exams and other matters, your People Manager will be your main point of contact and s/he will always be on hand.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • How busy you are depend how long you have been at the firm. When you first begin your placement, there is not much work available as you are not experienced enough to perform the work. However, this is a good thing as it leaves you with time to study for upcoming exams (business placement 西瓜视频s are expected to sit 7 exams during the 11 month placement, at the same time as first year associates, of which 5 will be sat in the first three months). Once busy season starts (Jan-Apr), you will be inundated with work.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Business placement 西瓜视频s are expected to do the same work as first year associates, therefore your work will be directly contributing to the audit file and will be reviewed by a senior. To complete your work, you will be required to speak to the client and use your own personal judgement.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Team working and communication were the main skills I developed. Audits are often time pressured and set backs occur regularly, therefore you will need to liaise with the client and keep your team updated on the progress of your work. That way, if the client isn鈥檛 giving you want, your senior will know the status of your work and can decide to step in to give them a push.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Not much time is spent in the PwC office. Instead, most of your time will be spent on client site with your audit team. The team on site consists of two junior staff and a qualified senior (who will be reviewing your work). Managers and an engagement leader (the person who signs the audit report) will be on site once or twice during the audit. The size of the audit team will increase depending on the size of the client. The atmosphere in the audit team often depends on the senior.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • PwC has a dedicated team to deal with the organisation side of the placement. That team deals with the onboarding process of business placement 西瓜视频s, for example, making sure that you are have been CRB checked, making sure all your qualifications are legitimate etc. Exams will be organised by the exams team who will also be handling the first year associates as well.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • At the start of the year (in September), business placement 西瓜视频s are required to submit a list of objectives and these will be re-visited by your People Manager to decide whether a graduate offer is to be made. The firm runs regular training courses, one of which focuses on the soft skills. PwC hires external speakers for these training courses.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Most business placement 西瓜视频s are offered employment upon graduation, and most choose to take this offer. There is a minority of 西瓜视频s who are not offered future employment, and this may be because of poor performance on the job or failing exams. Business placement 西瓜视频s are subject to the same exam policies are first year associates.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • Because there is only a small number of positions for business placement 西瓜视频s, each office in the country only have a few in their office and we all know each other very well. However, due to the nature of audit, we are hardly all in the office at the same time and so it鈥檚 difficult to meet up with each other.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I completed my placement in London and naturally the cost of living is high. However, your salary is adjusted to reflect this and is significantly higher than regional offices. The costs of living in London (highest first) are listed as follows: rent, travel, food and entertainment. Despite this, after taking out all your costs from your salary, there is still some money left over. However, instead of spending this, I would recommend saving it up to be used for business trips: even though the client ultimately pays for all your hotel and food expenses, you will be paying for it first and then reimbursed. Expenses take at least a week to be approved and paid into your bank account.

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Due to the nature of audit, staff are rarely based in the office and only senior staff are based in the office (ie. managers and above). The nightlife depends on the area of the client. However, there is nothing to stop you from travelling into central London on Friday evening as the transport network is so convenient.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • PwC has its own sports clubs and they often play against the other Big 4 teams in the evenings and on the weekend. If sports don鈥檛 suit you, there is a charitable entity that comprises of individual teams of 7, led by a partner. This charitable entity is open for other non PwC auditors to join.
