The Role
I really enjoyed my time with PwC. Not only were there plenty of challenges in the workplace and a variety of work, there were also many social options on offer - and the three day residential at the start of the internship really connected us all as interns.
Instead of treating me like someone that was only there to do menial tasks, my team made sure that I was given a variety of work - including work that was then sent on to clients! They also took time out of their days to explain concepts to me that I didn't undertstand. The team as a whole were also really friendly, and made me feel accepted.
I was given so much support by my team. My buddy was there to answer any questions I had about the technical stuff, or the day to day running of the office. I also had a people manager, who I saw often, who would make sure I was enjoying the internship, and would offer advice and support on issues surrounding holidays and illness.
Most days, I had lots of work to do. However, at the beginning of the internship, I didnt have a lot, as I hadn't gone through all of my training yet- so they couldn't give me work. There were also some hours of the day when people would be too busy to explain work to me. However, I was given training material to work through when nobody had anything they could delegat to me.
Although, obviously, all my work was checked multiple times by senior people - I was given responsibility in managing my own deadlines and prioritising which work was important. I was also given a variety of work which would be sent to clients, or used in client presentations.
Although the specific skills, related to actuary, will not be the most useful in my degree( economics) the softer skills learnt will be of great benefit throughout my degree studies, and into my future working life. For example, I really learnt the value of working in a team, managing deadlines and using excel.
The Company
There was never really a dull moment in the office. Everyone was really friendly, and people were always talking to one another. We were encouraged to ask questions, and told that nobody would judge us for making mistakes. The system of hot-desking also meant that you could move around the office and sit next to different people if you wanted to talk to them.
From the actuary point of view, the internship was pretty well set up - being that everyone in the ofice knew to give me work, and I had plenty of support from my people manager and buddy. However, the initial training stage wasn't too relevant to actuary, as we had to train with the tax people, thus getting a very tax specific approach. When arriving at the office, we were told to pretty much forget everything we had learnt! However, the three day residential training was very well organised, and we got to meet lots of new people, and really learn about the business.
They organised a three day residential in Windsor, for all the interns to have basic training and to get to know each other. All meals were provided as was accomodation. During the first week in the office, various staff members gave up their time to give training sessions specific to the LOS. We were also all given company laptops, as well as various computer accessories.

During the internship, you are encouraged to collect feedback on the pieces of work you do for different members of the team. At the start of the internship, you set objectives with your people manager, of things that you hope to schieve during the 6 weeks with the company. At the end of the internship, you have a meeting with your people manager, who will assess you against your feedback and objectvives, and let you know whether they want you to join the team.
The Culture
As I was in Birmingham, there was a variety of things to do after work with my fellow interns, especally as the office was very close to the train stations and shopping district. We also ate lunch together most days in the company canteen - really bonding us together. Because of the residential, we all got to know each other really well, and I look forward to keeping in touch with them after the internship!
Birmingham has pretty cheap nighlife, a variety of shops, and public transport isn't too expensive. As a 西瓜视频 at the University of Birmingham, I lived in Selly Oak, which is where all the 西瓜视频s live. This meant that I just had to catch a 10 minute train into the office, which was really cheap, and then walk the rest of the way.
Although most days we were too tired to go on a night out, as a 西瓜视频 in Birmingham, I am very familiar with the variety of nightlife offered! The office isn't located too far from any restaurants and bars - and there are even 西瓜视频 friendly options. There are definitely lots of different options for anyone new to Birmingham.
