The Role
I really enjoyed my internship. It was well structured, with a residential induction to introduce us to the technical aspects of the job, as well as an office induction where we learnt how to do basic things in the office such as printing and got the chance to meet many useful and interesting employees at the office. I have got the chance to complete a wide range of tasks and have been exposed to many new things, including Aura and new databases such as Iris.
Very. All my colleagues in the office have been approachable and helpful. The managers for all my jobs have always been happy for me to ask questions, often taking the time to go beyond the essential detail in their explanations, so that I can learn more background informataion about the task I have been set. Colleagues who are not my manager for a task have also been very helpful and talkative, which has been great.
For the internship I was allocated a buddy and a people manager. My buddy has been great for both day to day guidance, for example checking I have enough work to do, to asking if I want help finding work in a specific area that interests me. My people manager has helped me set detailed and broad objectives, to help guide me in acheiveing what I have set out to do in the internship. He has been in contact with me regularly, to check I am happy with the work I am doing and to review the feedback I have achieved.
Most days I have been very busy. However, there have been some days where I have not been assigned to any jobs in particular, when I have had to ask many managers and associates if they have work for me to do, and sometimes still not finding anything. This is when the Dragon Den's scheme and background Business Development work has been useful, so that even when I have no job specific tasks to do, I do not have to sit and do nothing.
I was given a lot of responsibility. For example, I would have a task explained to me and then I would be left to work on in independently for up to a week. I enjoyed this as it allowed me to get through the work in a way that suited me and that I found most methodical. I was also given a lot of responsibility in terms of the type of tasks I was assigned. For example, checking that the figures from payslips matched those in company's financial statements.
I have not yet returned to University for the next term, however I would imagine that the analytical skills and attention to detail used when checking that accounts match with documentation would be very useful when analysing data in my Chemistry degree. Beyond my degree studies, the skills I have developed surrounding assurance will give me confidence when applying for graduate jobs in the field in the future and on the job too. I have developed broader interpersonal skills, as I have got the chance to work with employees from across the business, from associates to senior managers. This will be useful in any job that I have in the future.
The Company
The atmosphere was very friendly. Everybody was very chatty and everybody would say hello and ask you how you were etc when you bumped into them in the office. If I ever needed help with anything, from working out the hot water tap to formatting a Pivot Table in Excel, people were very willing to help.
Very! The first week had a well planned residential induction as well as a two day office induction. This meant that we started our first week of work with a clear idea of what to expect and with more confidence. We were told to regularly ask for feedback which helped guide us with our personal objectives. The Retain system used, meant that we could see how our time was divided between clients so that we could plan our time accordingly. However, there were some occasions where interns had no tasks allocated to them which is unfortunate as we were all wanting to get exposed to as much work as possible.
During the induction they employed many of their staff as tutors, to teach tutor groups of about twenty five people with two tutors per group. This meant that we learnt a lot in the three days of our induction and had very knowledgeable people to learn from and answer our questions. My colleagues invested a lot of their time in explaining the Aura software to me, and teaching me about the company's they were auditing. By making us set objectives according to the PwC Professional, the firm helped us develop our skills in a wide range of areas.
Sports and Social Club
I would love the chance to work at PwC in the future, since my internship experience has been a very positive one. I feel like I will get the chance to learn a lot at PwC and from talking to current associates it appears that the support and flexibility you get for studying towards your ACA Qualification is great. For example, near exam time people get study leave so that they can focus on revising and passing their exams. It is also a company with clear progression paths which adds to the appeal of working for the firm.
The Culture
The office is near my home, so I get the train to and from work. My train ticket is a lot cheaper than if I was travelling to London (about one fifth of the price), because I am travelling in the direction away from London. In terms of socialising, the cost of drinks are similar to London prices.
There were chances to play on sports teams such as football, and casual games such as an assurance rounders game. There were also socials after team meetings, involving table tennis at a local venue. There were regularly drinks after work, which many people attended, especially when they marked a member of staff leaving the firm.
