The Role
I enjoyed the internship. The work provided was challenging and engaging, but amazing support was provided throughout. The opportunities that have come with this placement have been excellent, and I was really pleasantly surprised to find that I got to work on actual client work - rather than the stereotypical 'intern jobs' of making coffee and picking up dry cleaning. I was given a meaningful role within the teams that I worked with, and was really proud to be able to contribute to work that will make a meaningful difference to the clients.
I felt very valued. While it was clear that I was limited by my lack of specific knowledge, they were very quick to try and teach me new skills and then set me off on tasks that would contribute to the overall goal of the project. Being allowed to provide a singificant contribution to the end work was a really enjoyable aspect of the job.
This was flawless. It didn't matter who you asked - everyone was never too busy to help teach or explain something. I was able to learn a raft of new skills thanks to the volume of people willing to devote their time to helping develop my understanding. I was never made to feel silly or inferior for having to ask questions, and was actively encouraged by everybody to learn as much as possible during my time at the company.
There were big fluctuations in workload, which perhaps was a slight downside. Some days I would be in the office until 7pm or later, which I was surprised at after being told that interns rarely work overtime. Then on other days we would be stuck waiting to receive information back from clients, and would achieve little for hours at a time as we couldn't begin or complete our work without this information. The fluctuations were slightly frustrating, as obviously I would prefer to work hard every day and then leave on time. It was always a team effort though, and if anything people would try to take work from me if I would otherwise have had to do overtime. Everyone pulls together to get the job done, it's a great culture.
A surprisingly large amount! In some circumstances I would learn a role or skill whilst under close supervision for a few days, and then on a new batch of accounts be left to handle that particular role entirely independently. Being able to complete a section of the overall project myself from start-to-finish was really enjoyable; the sense of reward that I would get from knowing that I had made a real contribution was great. I really appreciated the trust that was placed in me to get the job done to their high standards.
If I choose to go in to Assurance following my graduation from University, the skills that I learned during my internship will be extremely useful - as they're exactly what I'll be doing during the full time job! The benefit of being given real responsibility during the internship is that I've been able to try and learn what will actually be taking place during the full-time role.
The Company
The atmosphere was great. Everyone is extremely friendly, welcoming, and eager to help you in any way they can. People on entirely different projects, and having never met you before, would stop what they were doing to offer you help if you looked confused or lost. Their was a real cameraderie, and it made arriving at the office each day so much more enjoyable knowing that the team that you're a part of is a happy one.
I think it was well organised. There was a few small hick-ups - laptops not always working, mix-ups in scheduling etc. - but overall it was very well ran and everything seemed to run very smoothly. It made certain points in the experience, which could have been very stressful, much easier to deal with.
They must have invested so much money in each of us - I couldn't quite get my head around it all! We were given five days of specific training at the start of the internship, and then relatively constant training on-the-job for the next few days. As competency grew they were able to give us more free reigh, but there was always someone there to ask and teach you whenever you got stuck. The time invested in training us was immense.
Company Parties/Events
The possible career prospects within PwC are really excellent. Potential career progression within the company itself is immense, and to aspire to be a partner after a couple of decades of work for the company would not be an ill-considered life goal for people who would enjoy the work. Interns have an excellent chance of being offered graduate roles (+90% I am led to believe) and committed graduates can find themselves earning a lot of money at an excellent firm after a few years of hard work and committed service.
The Culture
The first three days were ran at a hotel, for a residential induction. THe atmosphere was amazing, as interns from across the country met, mingled, became friends and exchanged details. I've made a number of new friends who I will hopefully stay in touch with after the internship is over.
Most Fridays a group would go to the local pub for drinks after work. Being Newcastle, this was very affordable,
I didn't go out at all unfortunately, so not sure!
As I wasn't there for very long I didn't look at getting involved with those, but we were offered the chance to play football with colleagues - and there was always drinks after work on Fridays!
