The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement year at PwC. I have learnt a lot about Forensic Services and more specifically the way in which a multinational professional services firm operates. It has provided me with a greater understanding of the services that PwC offer. The people that I have worked with have made the experience a very enjoyable one and I am glad that I chose PwC to undertake a placement year.
One of the main things that I have enjoyed on my placement is meeting new people who I believe have now become friends. Everyone on the team that I have been working with has been very welcoming since the very first day and as such I believe that this has made me feel like a valued member of the team. I was treated like that of a graduate and quite often, people would not be able to differentiate between the two.
Throughout my placement year, I have had the constant support of a number of different people who have always been on hand to answer any queries that I have had. I have always felt that my people manager as well as my line manager have provided guidance at every opportunity, this includes both aspects of my daily work life as well as my general well-being. The management and supervisor support has been fantastic!
The work load in Forensics is very project driven and as such the work load varies. During my placement, I have been kept busy on a number of different projects throughout the year. Deadlines have often driven the busy periods of the placement year and I have had to work overtime on some days to help achieve these deadlines however this has been balanced out by other times where I have had not much work on. I think that the variety of work that I have been involved with has kept me busy overall.
During my placement year, my role was that of an associate. Throughout the year, however, through building trusting relationships, I have been working on projects in the role of an experienced associate and quite often as a qualified senior associate. I believe that given my lack of previous knowledge and accounting experience, I was given the most responsibility that I possibly could have had.
The placement that I undertook at PwC does not bare any relevance to the degree that I am studying at university and so the nature of the work will not necessary help me with my degree studies. However, I do believe that the soft skills that I have developed over the course of the year will help significantly with my studies in final year. PwC really take an interest in developing their employees development and there were many opportunities available to me in order to help better myself.
The Company
The atmosphere in the Birmingham office has been very welcoming - the Birmingham office is not huge but it is not small either. I think it is the right size to be able to get to know people from a range of different teams, whether it be over a coffee or lunch. Everyone is very friendly and this year when the Euros were on, the games were streamed live in the atrium and everyone was welcome to watch creating a great atmosphere in the office.
The Forensics Business Placement scheme was an extremely organised scheme . There was a dedicated team that have helped with settling into the firm as well as keeping in touch with us during the placement. The team had obviously spent a lot of time planning the scheme and this was demonstrated within the awareness of business placement 西瓜视频s in the department. It had a clear structure which we were informed of at the beginning of our placements however we were able to work around that schedule should that have been necessary. There was also the HR side of the placement team who were also really helpful. They were always available to answer any HR related issues.
I did not sit any of the ACA qualification exams during my placement year however if I was to return to PwC as a graduate, I would be provided with all the necessary training and development to ensure that I am able to qualify as a chartered accountant. Whilst on placement year, however, I have received training on my soft skills such as Writing Skills programmes, Presentation skills programmes, etc. I have also had the opportunity to learn a significant amount about Forensics Services and the services that they are able to provide. I have had a number of development days throughout the year where the focus has been on individual services such as financial investigations, disputes, financial services, etc.

Future employment prospects with PwC are very appealing. At the end of most placement schemes, there is the opportunity to gain a place on the graduate scheme for that line of service. As you have spent the year working with the organisation, most times there isn't a need for a further interview or assessment, your progress throughout the year enables your managers to make a decision about whether or not to offer you a job. I have been offered a place on the graduate scheme, which is an absolutely great opportunity as it takes the pressure off for final year!
The Culture
The placement 西瓜视频s met up on a regular basis, having lunch together and also drinks after work.
As I lived at home during my placement year, I did not really encounter the 'cost of living' is Birmingham. However I do know that renting and accommodation all depends on the area that you want to live in, with the city centre being more expensive than other areas of Birmingham. The cost of food and drink in Birmingham is not too expensive however again, this depends on where you go - some restaurants in the city centre are quite expensive but there are also some that are very reasonably priced!
I lived at home during my placement year however as Birmingham is very heavily populated with 西瓜视频s, there are always events on during the weeknights/ weekends.
There were a few opportunities to get involved with activities, including the firms annual sports day, bike riding, etc.
