    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • From the people I was working with, to the tasks I was allocated I found nearly every aspect of my placement enjoyable. I would have to say that the biggest influence on my time at PwC was the people. Everyone I met and worked with from day one was friendly, understanding of my level of knowledge and willing to put the time in and allow me opportunities in order to help me develop.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Even during my first weeks I was given a high level of responsibility and trusted by more senior members of the team. This could at times be daunting but really built my self confidence and made me believe in my abilities. As well as this, the team made every effort to integrate me in to the social side of the work place as quickly as possible.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • PwCs ethos regarding learning is heavily geared towards learning whilst doing (rather than learning from textbooks or lectures). This meant that the support from more senior members of the team is very important. I always felt that senior members of the team were willing to take time to explain things to me and were always available should I have any questions. As a result of this I was able to pick things up at a relatively quick pace and build relationships with more senior members of the team.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Due to the nature of Forensics work, the work load during my placement varied wildly. Some days I was busy all day and stayed past 5:30 (never later than 7 though!) and on other days I was very quiet with little chargeable work to do so would leave early (knowing that I would make it up during more busy periods). Normally, my level of work was dictated by deadlines set by clients and therefore out of my (and PwCs) control. I quite liked that my days were so varied!

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was surprised how much responsibility I was given during my placement. As mentioned before, much of my learning experience was 'on the job' so sometimes it can feel like you're thrown in at the deep end a little bit! I did however find this very rewarding and it certainly boosted my self confidence. I never felt that I was alone though and could always ask questions if I was unsure about something.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Against my expectations, I feel that during my placement I developed far more 'soft' skills rather than technical ones. With hindsight, I feel that these skills are possibly more valuable than any technical skills that I learnt. Going back to university I will have far greater organisation and time management skills than before. I also now understand the importance of being well networked and seek to continue this good practice back at university.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • In general the atmosphere in the office was usually dictated by who was in the office on that particular day! As a lot of the work in Forensics requires people to be out at client site the number of people in the office varied on a day to day basis. I did however find that the 'hot desking' in PwCs office was very good! This meant that you could sit next to someone different every day (if you wanted!) and that more senior members of the team were easily accessible.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Having been running for a few years now, the Forensics placement scheme is pretty well established. There is a timetable in place for certain events where all Forensics placements from all over the country come together which all runs smoothly and is organised well in advance. As well as this the support system set up alongside the placement scheme is very good!

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Several events were set up for placement 西瓜视频s to learn about different parts of the business , which I found very valuable (as the firm is so big and does so much!). As well as this, more functional skills were also thought through, for example, excel workshops. However, as mentioned before, a lot of my learning and development took place on various projects through coaching from more senior members of the team.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I was offered to come back on the Forensics-Assurance split scheme in September 2017 upon the completion of my degree. The process for this was relatively informal and included a moderation in which selected members of the team looked at the feedback each placement 西瓜视频 had compiled over the year. The impression I received was that if you showed willingness to learn and integrated with the team well then you were very likely to be offered to come back. This would make sense as the recruitment process for the placement scheme was identical to the one for the grad scheme.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • Despite there not being many placement 西瓜视频s in Manchester, I found the social side of my placement really good! This was mainly due to the fact that I joined the firm as the same time as the September graduate intake which included grads across all lines of service. As well as this, I built several strong relationships with a core group of junior staff in the Forensics team which I will continue to socialise with!

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was able to afford to live in a 2 bedroom apartment in the city centre, 15 minutes walk away from the office. Some parts of Manchester are quite expensive but, for the moment, there are still pockets of affordable rental properties. Socialising was usually relatively affordable, depending on where you went! The price of a pint varies from 拢3-拢5 depending on where you go!

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in Manchester is amazing! There really is something for everyone, all within walking distance! There were a few places around the office that were popular for after work drinks and nights out however, these places tended to be slightly more expensive. However, due to the large 西瓜视频 population in Manchester there are plenty of cheap nights out available!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • In the Manchester office there are several sports teams and society type groups. These are not however advertised very well! If you are interested in taking part in something outside of the office with work then chances are that it already exists, it's just about asking around until you find out who organises it! (which is usually pretty easy!)
