The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship, both socially and on a work level. I found that the atmosphere and attitude in the office really helped as everyone was always upbeat and ready to help. I feel that the internship provided me with very useful experience whilst making for an enjoyable way to spend my summer.
Everybody within the Glasgow office was extremely friendly and welcoming. From my very first day in the office I was made to feel like part of the team by being invited along to team meetings and socials events. Not only was I made to feel included on a social level but I was also given relevant pieces of work to complete, some of which spanned for the entire duration of my internship and I was solely responsible for their outcome. At no point did I feel like I was being treated differently from any other 1st year Associate. Whilst as an intern you may think you are not going to contribute greatly in your 6 weeks, the impact I had on the projects I worked out was evident from the positive feedback I received from colleagues.
I felt that the managers were very supportive throughout any pieces of work I completed. When starting a piece of work managers would make a point of talking me through everything before I started. They also really encouraged me to use the knowledge I had gained at University to try and work things out for myself which I feel really helped my practical understanding of not only the job but also aspects of my degree. They were also on hand throughout if I needed additional help or something explained in more detail. If there was something I was struggling to grasp they would take the time to sit with me and work though it together so I fully understood what I was doing. I feel like level of support and understanding was vital to how well I engaged with the work I was completing.
I feel that I had a constant stream of varied work throughout my internship. There were very few occasions where I felt I had too much or too little, however, this was always resolved by speaking to other members of the team. If I felt that I was quiet I would ask for more work and my colleagues would find me something useful and interesting to do. Likewise, if I felt I had too much work I would speak to my managers and they would reassign work to another associate so no one person was too busy.
I felt that I was given more responsibility than I had expected. I trusted to complete lengthy pieces of work by myself which were an essential stage in the work done for the client. I was also given the opportunity to sit in on client meetings and take the minutes as large team meetings.
During my 6 weeks I spent a week with each of the sub-teams within Tax. This gave me great exposure to the breadth of work and opportunities in Tax which went above and beyond my knowledge from my degree. The internship also gave me the opportunity to put a lot of my practical skills from university into practice. This enhanced my understanding as I was able to see the impact on a real life organisation. In addition to this, I have also been exposed to various current tax topics throughout my internship which I have found very interesting and has made me consider completing my final year dissertation on a tax related topic.
