The Role
It was a really good experience which really exposed me to what management consulting is like. I met and built strong relationships with both PwC staff and the client and overall gained valuable insights and knowledge through the scheme.
Everyone was very supportive, open-minded and friendly. My team in particular were tremendously helpful during the first few weeks as I settled down and appreciated when I asked questions and was pro-active. I've really enjoyed working with everyone I've met.
The support structure is quite strong with numerous people that you can reach out to through the internship. From my super nice buddy to enthusiastic People Manager, never once did I feel like I was not supported during the internship.
The level of work definitely varied on the days but that meant there was a good balance of things to do. I really enjoyed the variety of work I did so it wasn't all the same thing every week and being kept fairly busy throughout the internship meant I always had to keep on my toes.
Definitely the level of responsibility built up through the internship as my team got to know me and as I became more confident in contributing to the project. Indeed towards the end of the project, it was very heartening to be given key part of work to complete that contributed to the final deliverable and just went to show just how much you can do if you work hard and produce quality work.
There was definitely a steep learning curve and a lot of absorbing of information and business processes every day. I have definitely picked up skills that will extend into life such as how to build a variety of relationships and how to behave in a business environment.
The Company
Everyone was really enthusiastic and even at the end of the project when there was a lot of pressure, the office still maintained a positive energy. It really helped keep one motivated and there definitely was a good balance between that 'serious work' feel and a more light hearted energy which helped keep stress levels down!
The internship was very well organised with induction in the first week, a mid internship review and a final internship session. The structure ensured that we were able to get the most out of the internship through the weeks and also not feel like I had to find my way around.
The residential induction in the beginning was really good way to gain skills that have helped through the internship. There were some online training that we had to complete as well which helped raise awareness to any issues or situations that we might encounter in our time working. The firm is really good at making sure you feel prepared especially in the beginning of the internship with the residential induction that was a fun way to learn a few important skills.
Very good future employment prospect however it does depend on how well you do during the internship. One thing I really appreciated is that PwC looks at who you are as a person as well as the quality of work and proactivism you demonstrate. It really is a fair process and one where getting a future job is really up to you and in control. They also make sure you have the best resources available in order to help you reach your potential and get that job!
The Culture
All the interns built up a really good relationship which was really great. The residential induction was a really good way of getting to know everyone in your office and division so when you went to the office on the first day there were some familiar faces. From weekly drinks after work to a few social event, everyone was very supportive of each other which made the internship even better overall.
London in general can be very expensive especially if you are not living at home. The internship does pay decently but one definitely have to budget wisely as food and transport are generally your main costs during the internship. As it is during summer there are a lot of free events which means if you are smart you can really enjoy London at a minimum cost. Some clubs also offer free entry before a certain type which is also a smart way of avoiding what could otherwise be an expensive night out!
There was a good nightlife around the office with a decent amount of pubs and bars nearby. The interns generally went to the same place for drinks after work but for socials the destination varied. Being London, the variety of options to choose from is boggling so often it often came down to what most people were feeling that day.
There are lots of things going in the firm every week and it really depends on what you are interested in doing. From sports teams to a triathlon it really comes down to what you want to pursue. I personally am interested in the Emerging Technologies team so I reached out to a few people in there to find out what events were going on and what I could attend.
