The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship from start to finish and cannot fault it one single bit! I was involved in client work from my first day in the office and got the chance to work on a variety of different projects. The first few days were spent in Windsor taking part in training sessions and meeting all the other interns which was great as it helped me get used to waking up early before I started work the week after!
I felt really valued by all my colleagues and they were always happy to help with any problems that I had and didn鈥檛 mind me asking silly questions about how to do the task I was given or explain what certain abbreviations meant. They really appreciated the work that I did and always let me know if I had done a good job once a task was completed.
The support and guidance given during the internship by PwC and all my colleagues was amazing! My buddy and people manager were always there to help me with any questions or help me get involved in certain areas of work which I was interested in. In fact, everyone within the firm gets assigned a buddy and people manager to help people progress in their career at PwC which shows that they really value their employees.
It varied from day to day but I was usually occupied with a few jobs each day and deadlines were never too tight and if they were then they were easily do-able within the time limit given. I always had on-going long term projects to get on with so was never sat there doing nothing. No overtime was required as I had enough time in the day between 9am and 5.30pm to get all my jobs done.
I was given responsibility on clients jobs from my first day in the office which was daunting at first but I had lots of help if I needed it from all my colleagues around me. I was even given the chance to write an article on pensions which would be sent to lawyers so it鈥檚 fair to say that I was given quite a lot of responsibility despite only being there for a short space of time!
I don鈥檛 believe that any actuarial skills that I learnt will be applicable in my degree studies but all the experience that I gained will definitely help when I start my career as an actuary. I will definitely feel more confident when I start a job as I already know a few processes that are required and I will make sure that I look at strengthening my Excel skills before I start as an actuary.
The Company
The atmosphere was quite relaxed in the office, especially when I was sat within the Rewards and Employment area as everyone liked to have a little chat now and again which was nice. There was also lots of treats dotted around the office such as ice creams, brownies, cookies etc which people bring in a few days a week which are a nice sugar boost during the day! Overall, a great atmosphere and I really enjoyed being there.
It was very well organised from starting the training week in Windsor where there was lots of chances to network with fellow interns and enjoy meals together, including the street food party on the grounds that was arranged for the second night. Whilst I was in the office I had my buddy and people manager always there to help me and people came to me asking me if I had time to do jobs for them on a regular basis.
Training sessions were organised during the days in Windsor but I was put with the Tax department so wasn't much use for my job in the office as an Actuary but it was useful to learn nevertheless. Once starting in the office we were given actuarial training via webex by different employees within different offices which were useful for jobs that we had to do on a daily basis.
The Culture
I lived at home myself as I already live in North Manchester so only had a short met journey to and from the office each day to get to work. The cost of the met wasn't too bad if bought on a monthly basis but if bought separately day to day it would have ended up quite expensive! Socialising is fairly cheap but it depends where you go. I enjoy taking advantage of happy hours so I know the best places to go at certain times to try and save money for myself!
Socials were organised within HRS including a curry night (which is apparently a regular thing in the office) and a night spent at All Star Lanes taking advantage of a private bowling alley. Both events were great fun and gave me a chance to get to know my colleagues on a social level outside of the office and have more of a chat about things not work related! I've also been invited to promotion drinks next week which I am looking forward to!
