The Role
I enjoyed it more than I have expected. Most of the stuff I worked on was really enjoyable. The variety of work kept me interested. Apart from work, the social aspect was great too. The team was friendly and it felt natural for me to fit in. Cccasionally, we would go out for a drink or a game of rounders.

Support and guidance I received was great. A part from a buddy (who has been at the firm for at most 2 years) who is your first point of contact, I was also assigned a people manager (who has been at the firm for typically 4-5 years). My people manager guided me through setting objectives and achieving them for the internship. My buddy started last year so she knew the process I was going through. Both had helped and offered me a lot of great advice and insight.
The work that we do is project based. Depending on what projects we are working on, there were quiet days and there were really busy. Generally, there was enough work to keep you busy throughout the whole day. For the 6 weeks of my internship, I worked late twice and it was because I wanted to help. Most people in the office would tell you to go home if you stay behind after work!
As I have mentioned before, the work that I did affected the outcome of the project. I was given a lot of freedom to do what I saw fit. I did not feel lost either because there was always a safety net - someone to go over your work once you are done with the task.
I felt that apart from the technical knowledge I gained over the course of the internship. I also gained soft skills and developed a professional work ethic. The most valuable thing I learn was how to behave in a professional working environment and how to manage my time and meet deadlines.
The Company
It was really laid back and open. Even when people were busy, they did not mind helping me even with small tasks. The same goes for everyone, even the more senior people. Everyone was friendly towards each other and I felt that that helped boosting the productivity of the workplace.
The programme was really well structured. During the first week, we received a 3-day residential induction in Windsor, where we took part in small training, team building activities as well as networking events. For the rest of the week we received a local induction to get used with the workplace. Over the following week it was a mixture of working and more technical voice conference training.
I felt that the firm and everyone in the team really invested in my personal development. The people manager and objectives setting system demonstrates how much the firm wants you to achieve your objectives. There were a review every 2 weeks to make sure I was on track in getting my objectives done. Also a lot of training was put in place.
Company Parties/Events
It is easy to undertake a secondment in a different business line or even in a different location in another country. I feel that my options are not limited to what I initially started. Also, I feel that if you work hard, your work will be recognised and you will be rewarded accordingly.
The Culture
There were many social events during the induction as well as during the internship. In the last week, there will be an event where interns present their ideas on how they could improve the firm's workplace. Apart from formal events, the interns were really keen on keeping in touch with each other, despite working in different offices and business lines.
The office is in central London so it is extremely costly to live, commute and socialise. It could be difficult to find a place to live and to commute to work every day. However, the pay you get compensates for the higher living costs. Also, there are a lot of places to go and things to do in London.
Nightlife is great in London. There are always a lot of places to go and things to do. There are many pubs and clubs you can go to whether it is central London or not. If that is not your type of scene then you can go to musical theatres and movie theatres. Again, there is always something for you to do.
For the duration of my short internship, there were not many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work. However, we were encouraged to take part in and triathlon events, a Dragon's Den like event where you contribute ideas to make the workplace more productive. I personally enjoyed going to team social and sport event like going to the pub or playing rounders in Hyde Park.
