    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed the work I had to complete. You get to have real responsibility and the fact you get to work on significant and real client projects surprised me. Some days I had lots of work to complete and it made the job even more enjoyable trying to manage my time and complete various tasks at once, however there were also some days that went slower as my work load was reduced, but this was due to it not being a very busy time for the department, but also as I am an intern and not qualified I guess there is a limit as to the extent of work I can be tasked with.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I always felt valued by my colleagues. Each piece of work I completed was received gratefully by my colleagues, to which they were always happy to sit down with me afterwards and discuss how I did and give me feedback, but also more than happy to email it over to me so I could reflect and also had proof of my progression. You get an exposure to all levels of staff who come to you to discuss work, from associates to even partners who are more than happy to discuss any questions you may have and make the effort to get to know you more which really helps you to feel valued by the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Your main contacts at the start of your internship are your buddy - a first or second year associate, and your people manager who is a senior associate or manager. Both are around to answer any questions or concerns you may have and always make time for you. My buddy always helped with the day to day things and provided me with multiple projects that she was working on. My people manager was always around to talk to when I needed, and ensured that I constantly had things to be getting on with and always made sure I had everything I needed, which was very supportive.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • As I mentioned in a previous response, my tasks varied on a daily basis. Some of the days required me to manage my time efficiently between multiple projects and tasks, whereas other days I had little to do and found my work by asking everybody possible to accumulate some and increase my workload. I am aware however that this is due to the relatively quiet time for the department, as well as due to me being an intern I am yet to build my own client base to increase my daily work, of which would be the case when you join as a graduate.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • For a placement, I believe I was given lots of responsibility. I was working on real clients doing in depth work and therefore it was down to me to make sure all the work I completed was completely accurate. I was also given responsibilities such as phoning HMRC with queries on behalf of clients which is an important role that I was allowed to undertake.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • From my time spent switching between different projects and facing multiple deadlines, I have developed how to use my time better which is something that is going to help me manage my multiple modules during my exams in my degree, but also when I start similar work in my career. As well as this, the skills I have been using often such as taking notes and picking out key information from large documents is going to help me going forward, as it will save me time but also ensure I know when to be noting down information and when to be listening and acknowledging information.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office is different to what I expected. Everybody is extremely sociable and always more than willing to help you out or just have a general conversation with you, which is great for team morale as everybody gets to know each other well, in both a professional and personal manner.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was set up well, all of the main events that occurred during your internship such as the induction were very well planned out and we knew all of the details well in advance. My day to day work wasn't planned in advance as I don't think this was possible, it was a case of work being allocated when it comes through and me gaining more work by asking for it, however after hearing from other interns in the assurance service, they knew where they were going to be travelling to and with what clients they would be working with weeks in advance. Overall I think the internship was very well planned out, it just depends on your line of service as to how much notice you will get of your upcoming work.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • PwC invest very heavily in you as an intern. I have travelled to London and beyond on a weekly basis, sometimes even more, for client meetings as well as specialist training sessions on VAT. I have attended multiple meetings in the office too, as well as phone calls with clients which is all assisting in my development within indirect tax. The first weeks induction is very good. It is packed with all the training and knowledge to ensure you are at a great starting place for the start of your internship.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The future looks bright for those within PwC. The prospects for graduates are well advertised but after the internship you get to really understand how different the company is compared to others for all of the right reasons. PwC has always been the company I have wanted to work for and this is certainly still the case. I am in my penultimate week now and we find out on the status of our offer towards the final days.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • The office is a very social place in itself, however there are multiple events weekly for everyone to attend. Things such as badminton, football etc are all sports that have their own social clubs and are played each week by whoever wants to go along. There's also monthly events for the whole team to go to, as well as celebratory events for the exam passes each exam sitting (of which there are a lot!).

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As I live in Birmingham already, there is no change from my normal living expenses. For people moving to Birmingham however, I consider there to be a range of different shops and places to go that cater for both cheaper and more expensive tastes. It is certainly cheaper than London, and for the second city there are great opportunities within the firm.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I'm sure the social scene of Birmingham is very well known, Broad Street offers many diverse clubs, pubs and restaurants and ensures that you won't be short of options on the evening and weekends. It is also only a 10-15 minute walk from the office, so everything is in reach if you fancy going for a meal or a pint with your colleagues after work.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, there were lots of things to do outside of work. There are multiple sports clubs to join, as well as an Olympic style events day to get involved in. PwC also allow a number of days per year to get involved in charity work, which is something that is encouraged by the firm and helps you benefit the community.
