The Role
I have really enjoyed my internship. It has been great to meet a wide range of people throughout the firm, and there is a strong social intern cohort. I have been amazed at how happy to help, answer questions, collaborate and share experiences employees are.
There was a very welcoming atmosphere and employees were very happy to talk to you and share their experiences. My project team always got me involved, encouraged me to experience other projects and invited me to events. They also always thanked me for pieces of work I did. My main issue was that the work I was doing was quite basic, so I did not feel like I was contributing that much.
I really liked the setup where you have a buddy you can ask more casual questions and a people manager who was not working on your team who you could discuss your personal development with. I was really impressed by how this personal approach seems to continue at all levels of the firm. My supervisor and team always gave an introduction to the topic before they asked me to do any work, and where happy to take any questions.
Obviously some days were more busy then others but I either always had work that I could be doing, or personal admin to be catching up with when there was no project work. I also often had events in the evening which led to quite a busy schedule.
I was surprised that I was not given much responsibility during my internship at first. The tasks I was given were quite basic and I did not feel like they were stretching me. However after having a conversation with my line manager a few weeks in regarding this I was given more interesting roles. I would however have liked to have a small sub-project that I could have taken ownership of.
I am currently still on my internship so how this will assist with my degree studies and beyond remains to be seen. I think what I have mainly got out of it is an understanding of how to act in a corporate environment, and what would be expected of me if I were offered a place on the graduate scheme. I have definetely learnt more soft then hard skills and found watching the interaction between PwC employees and clients very interesting.
The Company
The atmosphere in More London on a Friday was very sociable and collaborative as everyone was in the office. Three days of the week I was at client site which was a bit strange at first as you are in someone elses office. One fay of the week I was in a small room with my team. I liked this setup the least as I found it quite claustrophobic.
The personal development side of things was organised very well, with everyone being allocated a budy and a people manager. In terms of improvements I think interns should have been told their client before the start of the internship so they could set up appropriate travel arrangements. The Dragons Den Challenge also could have been better organised, more clearly describing what was wanted and following through on what it promised.
We had a residential at the beginning of the internship for training. I really liked the people manager system where you have a specific person to talk to about your personal development and this really focused it for me. Once we started on client projects I feel more could have been done, for example lunch and learns on Fridays to find out about other competancies. If you wanted to get experience/ find out about different projects the onus was really on you to do this.
Company Parties/Events
I think PwC is an appealng place to work and start your career. There is a very collaborative focus and a big drive in personal development which I reallu appreciate. The people are also very nice, helpful and willing to share their experiences.
The Culture
There was a very good social scene amongst interns, we met up every Friday and talked throughout the week. Socialising with other collegues mainly came in the form of specific events.
Obviously London is very expensive. I found it quite difficult as the canteen at More London and my client site were not subsidised.
London nightlife is good and it is what you make of it. I really enjoyed socialising with interns and other collegues at specific events.
I enjoyed our team away day. However I had expected there to be more opportunities to get inolved with activities outside work and I would have appreciated these.
