    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship with PwC. Everyone I met was very keen to get to know me and see how I was doing, offering to help me in any way they could. There was a great work/life balance promoted by all and I attended many social outings and events as part of the internship. For me, the employees were the best thing about the internship and are a credit to the firm. I always looked forward to going into work and seeing my colleagues.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued! I was often invited to socials that social groups/team groups were having and was always made to feel welcome and included. Each employee was friendly and interested in me, from recent graduates to partners, and I was always made to feel welcome in meetings. Although I wasn't doing the most difficult/complicated/important work I was still kept in the loop about what projects work went on to help or was useful for which I really appreciated.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • On joining the firm I was allocated a buddy (someone relatively new to the firm, e.g. a recent graduate) who was in my social team and who I saw and chatted to most days. I was also allocated a people manager (someone more senior in the firm) who made sure I could join teams in the specific streams of work that interested me and who also decided if I was given a graduate role based on feedback from my colleagues. I found these two relationships so valuable and met often for catchups with both. Aside from these relationships, everyone I met was keen to help me and no question was a silly question! I always found the guidance and support I needed quickly.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This varied a fair amount as apart from being allocated a few initial projects for a set number of weeks we were largely free to ask around and find our own work. This really suited me as it allowed me to pursue the certain work streams that I was more interested in and as a result of this freedom I got involved in a wide variety of work. For the couple of hours free I had a week we had a large UK wide intern project accessible from our laptops to complete so I was rarely with nothing to do. It really was what you made it though! You were really encouraged to ask people for work and to ask how you could get involved.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The work I undertook was not the most important work going. That being said, the line of work I was in is very technical and therefore as an intern it is very difficult to be given particularly important work! So on the one hand I wasn't given that much responsibility, but on the other hand, there would be something wrong if I had been given it. The interns (there were 4 of us in my intake in the London office) were however given a project to complete which was solely due to us. This did feel more important (although it was still obviously checked by managers) as it was to be uploaded on PwC's internal website.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The main skills I developed during my time at PwC were communication skills and business/commercial awareness. I also attended multiple training sessions, e.g. on technical skills (profession specific), how to form excellent client relationships, changes to regulations etc. These didn't necessarily help in my degree studies (I study Mathematics) but they wil lcertainly help with beyond university. At best they will lead to a graduate offer with the firm and at worst they will help me in applications/interviews with other firms as I have a vastly improved knowledge of the kind of profession I want to be in!

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was not at all what I was expecting prior to my internship. Everyone was super relaxed and friendly. There was an area for sofas and coffee that we used to have catchups and chats with colleagues. PwC also operate hotdesking - where instead of having a set desk, staff book desks for a day/week etc - which makes good use of the office space available since many employees are out at clientsite/working from home etc. It also encourages a community feel as one day you may sit with your team, another day you may be sitting with completely different people! Overall I found the office atmosphere to be beneficial for working and being productive, whilst still being relaxed and friendly.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I was very impressed with the organisation of my internship. At every stage I knew what was planned for the next week or so and I always knew who to contact for various things. All employees were very welcoming of interns and obviously knew the process well. Many employees themselves had interned previously and it was interesting to hear about their experiences too. I was made to feel part of the bigger intern programme which I appreciated.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was invited to attend three or four training events during my internship, usually with the new graduates who we got to know quite well. They essentially gave us the same training as they were giving their graduates which I enjoyed. This gave me a good idea of the variety and type of training graduates receive. Staff were also keen to chat to me and talk to me about the profession and the firm and what my own career interests were so in that sense, they were all keen to help me develop in my career.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I have not yet finished my internship so I cannot say if I have got the graduate offer or not. There is a very structured process around the decision to offer interns graduate offers however and it is something the firm really invest in and care about. This all being said I believe the employment prospects within the organisation to be good providing you are a keen intern with a desire to learn!

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • My line of service within the firm was small (we had four interns in London in my intake, with one more in Manchester and one more in Edinburgh) yet I still felt like there was a good social scene amongst us. We got lunch together pretty much every day (all staff are very much encouraged to make the most of the hour lunchbreak) and went for a few evening meals/drinks etc together. There was also a good social scene amongst all colleagues and I attended several social events with various teams within the firm which I really enjoyed!

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Being London, going out for drinks was not the cheapest. That being said we were being paid for the internship so we didn't really mind! On top of that, apart from travel and lunch, I hardly paid for any food/drinks after work because my colleagues would pay for the interns. A fab work perk! I also lived at home during the internship so I cannot comment fairly on the cost of living.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I never actually went to a club with my colleagues but some of my fellow interns did. Being London, the nightlife is thriving. I did however go to several bars and pubs with the firm which were all pretty decent. The location of the office lended itself to this by being so close by to many restaurants, bars etc. Literally steps away there is such variety!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not so many out of office hours, no. That said, I attended a three day residential to kick off our induction (with the other 250+ UK interns in my intake), the annual AGM, the Summer Ball, qualification drinks etc. Interns were also invited to take part in the PwC Olympic event (which I couldn't make). These all helped to get to know my colleagues and with general community spirit.
