The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship with PwC. I interned in the Actuarial Services team in Edinburgh and I gained a lot of knowledge and a lot of friends during my time there. I gained an insight into a much larger variety of work than I could have imagined before starting my internship, the team really helped me get the most I possibly could out of my six week internship.
I felt valued by my colleagues and was treated as if I was a new graduate just joining the team - this is the case across PwC as the internship has the same application process as you would complete for a graduate position. I was set some challenging tasks that would be set to a new graduate and this was really useful to me as it gave me the chance to prove the quality of work I can produce and also learn a lot in the process. I felt that no matter which grade a member of the team is at you all get treated equally in terms of respect and this means there is a really friendly atmosphere at the office. A director was happy to let me shadow him for the day which was really great! I also attended team social events which were a great way to get to know everybody.
I was assigned a buddy and a people manager in the team and this was really useful as I knew who my first points of call were for any queries I had. I went for weekly catch ups with my buddy and people manager to get to know them and discuss how I was getting on as part of the team. I also got to know the team leader, it was nice to know I also had this point of contact for any questions I had. Even though these three members of the team were assigned to provide me guidance and support I felt like I could approach any member of the team and they would be happy to help me.
I was kept busy for the majority of my internship which was great! If any of the team saw I was a bit quiet for the afternoon they would let me help them with something they were working on or chat to me about interesting projects they had been involved in recently. I was mainly working on a half year audit - this kept me very busy most days and it was enjoyable to work as part of a smaller team and get the opportunity to attend and participate in client meetings.
I was really surprised and happy that I was given responsibilities during my internship. I was given topics to bring up in client meetings which was great for me to experience as I now know clients are not as scary as you may think! I was also assigned lots of tasks on the to do list which were enough to keep me going for a couple of days, I liked this as I didn't have to ask for work to be given to me. I felt like a true member of the half year team and my work load was fair in light of my lack of experience.
The skills I have developed here will be really useful to me in the future. I have developed my Excel skills, my networking skills and my confidence in internal and client meetings has grown massively. I also found out a lot of information as to how my studies are used whilst in work and built on my knowledge from university which has put me at an advantage going back to complete my final year!
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was very friendly and fun! Everybody seems to find the work they are doing challenging yet interesting and rewarding. The last Friday of every month there is office drinks held in the refreshment hub, this is a great time to get to know people from other lines of service. We often went out for team lunch and coffee catch ups so I got to know the team really well.
The internship was very well organised throughout. The recruitment process was well structured and I felt the communication from 西瓜视频 recruitment was really good and I was always given plenty of notice regarding next steps of the process such as dates for interviews etc. The induction was organised well, the 3 days were structured well and as a result of this I gained a lot of knowledge from my tutor. Before I arrived for my first day in the office I had been assigned jobs and it was nice for me to know I had work to be getting on with once I had arrived.
During my internship I got to attend technical training which was a great opportunity for me to gain knowledge that I otherwise would not cover until later in my education. I got to attend the AGM down in London where I learned about what Actuarial Services have been up to as a whole in the past year.

Very appealing! I really enjoyed my time with PwC and six weeks is not enough, I find out next week whether I receive a graduate position or not and I have my fingers crossed that I will as I would love to join the team here. I am really proud of the work I have produced during my time at PwC and I have had the opportunity to impress those that have reviewed it, this has been really rewarding for me.
The Culture
During the induction I got to know the rest of the Edinburgh interns well in a team building exercise and I also got to know the Actuarial Services interns in Manchester and London really well. The other Edinburgh interns and I went out for meals and drinks after work which was great time to catch up about what we had all been up to. I got to catch up with the other Actuarial Services interns when I went down for London for the AGM, summer ball and night out which was great fun!
I attend university in Edinburgh so I extended my contract to cover the time needed whilst I was completing my internship. The living and socialising costs were expected considering Edinburgh is a capital city, but much less than they would have been if I had been living and working in London! Interns are paid well and what I was paid covered my rent and socialising.
Edinburgh is a great night out! I got to go to lots of new bars with the team here and now have some new favourites. There are lots of places to go on a night out in Edinburgh and I had a many nights out during the term of my internship.
Loads of opportunities were available! The other interns in the Edinburgh office and I were allowed to arrange the office summer social which including races similar to those at sports day at school. We were given the opportunity to get involved with sports and social events during our time and there was lots of talk about charity events that we take part in - unfortunately as the internship is only 6 weeks long I didn't get chance to be invovled in these but it was nice to learn from the rest of my team about the fun activities they have taken part in whilst earning money for a good cause.
