The Role
For the most part I enjoyed the internship: there was enough variety to keep me stimulated; the office was relaxed, not to mention there was free gym membership, the people were very welcoming and I felt valued.
I felt as valued as an intern can realistically expect. I was treated as an incoming associate in a work-scenario and was able to build enough of a rapport with colleagues so that they could trust and value the work I produced.
I had a people-manager and buddy who were in touch before I had even started, so I always felt somebody was managing my development. They both would spontaneously check-up on me, but if I needed help they would always make time, even when busy. I should also add that most employees would spend time ensuring you were well equipped to carry out the tasks they set, encouraging questions aimed at enhancing your overall understanding..
I was fairly busy; there was a constant stream of work, but I did not feel overwhelmed.
I feel this is tied in to how valued I was by my fellow employees. I was given as much responsibility as was feasible; however, if you did really excel in a piece of work or in producing pieces of work for a colleague you would take on more responsibility.
They will not assist me in my degree as such, the skills fostered in my degree—problem solving—helped with the internship. I imagine the skills developed have contributed to life-skills such as: having an experience in an office-based scenario, completing assignments in a timely manner, becoming adroit with various work-focused software, gaining an understanding of the processes required for a huge firm to operate. In addition to the initial induction I took part in training days on capital allowances and Income tax, the usefulness of this cannot be denied. I had exposure to a range of financial areas, viz.: Private Equity, Corporate groups, Private Clients and various types of companies, all having particular needs. This undoubtedly helps your financial awareness.
