The Role
The internship has been a really good experience, in line with expectations, giving me a diverse range of opportunities to can discover more about my future career trajectory, and get a sense of where I might fit within PwC if I were to be offered a graduate job. Slightly more structure to the internship for my service line (digital trust) might have improved the experience even more however - I haven't yet had an opportunity to visit a client site, despite pushing for an opportunity. I am currently waiting for confirmation to join a project which will allow me to do this - and it is fantastic to be able to tailor the internship experience to what each person wants to get out of it, but having the option of a set rotation might allow interns particularly within the technology srervice lines to explore even more of the firm (for example 1 week with cyber, 1 week with business systems, 2 weeks on a client site...). Overall however the internship has provided me with fantastic opportunities to explore my own interests such as shadowing penetration testers, and getting involved with many different types of tasks.
Felt extremely valued. Felt part of team, wasn't looked down upon for being an intern, and was given a fair amount of responsibility. Also found that at all levels across the firm - everyone was extremely approachable and friendly, right up to partners.
My business contact was out of the office for most of the first week, which meant that I was without a project and unsure of the best point of contact for seeking work. However the buddy and people manager system ensured that support was always available even when my business contact was unavailable. Working on a project later in the internship I was able to meet on a daily basis with my supervisor to seek feedback, and discuss next steps.
I didn't have much work initially, whereas most of the core assurance interns were placed on clients straight away. Some weeks were busier, but working within normal office hours every day. Would have liked to have had more work early on.
Given a fair amount of responsibility, however varied dependent on the client / project. Within digital trust as well some of the more specialised work such as penetration testing is likely to mostly be shadowing, whereas working on a smaller project / being on a project from the beginning means that you are likely to be given significant responsibility.
Overall the skills I developed have been invaluable in the future. The importance of networking is paramount, and developing these skills will benefit me throughout my career, whether a PwC or anywhere else. Moreover the opportunity to work on a diverse range of tasks or projects, having to quickly assimilate information and the responsibility given to us will significantly help me in my studies and post graduation.
The Company
The atmosphere was very friendly - everyone was approachable - the breakout areas made for a very social environment and it didn't feel stressful. Only issue was booking desks was at times difficult but there were always tables free to work in the breakout areas. Overall couldn’t ask for much nicer of an atmosphere – despite the size of the office it didn’t feel scary or overwhelming at all!
Overall the internship was well organised. The residential induction, training days and dragons den events were fantastic ways of enhancing the internship experience. We were able to network and meet other interns, chat to partners over a dinner, and were invited along to the AGM and service line events and socials. However within my particular line of service, my team wasn't aware that an intern was even coming in until just a few days beforehand - and subsequently the first week was quiet and it was hard to get involved with projects initially.
It felt like PwC really invested heavily in us. From the residential induction days at Windsor, to the social events and opportunities we were given. Consequently I learned an enormous amount which will benefit me in the future. Moreover being welcomed into the team, given a reasonable amount of responsibility and opportunities to tailor the internship meant that it really felt as though PwC were making a significant investmet in us, and that they really wanted us to return. The internship was as much for us to explore whether PwC was a good fit for us, as well as for the firm to see whether we would fit within their structure, and so putting such an investment into our training and development was enormously appreciated.
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing. Certainly within my servie line we were given the opportunity to get involved in many different things, and it felt like there was a lot of scope for exploring different roles within PwC. That being said I would like to gain experience working in a tech startup to see how the atmosphere and working style compares - so I'm not sure at this stage that my career does indeed lie within PwC.
The Culture
There was a good number of interns within my office - all of whom were extremely nice and sociable. We arranged our own events - went out for drinks / cinema. All the interns on the induction event as well were sociable and up for drinks. however it would have been nice if weekly intern events had been organised by the firm itself, and would have given us an opportunity to network and socialise with people beyond our office.
Expensive! Within the London offices there's not much more to say! If you were based within a London office but had to rent accomodation, along with transport and food costs the internship would have drained money. However London is definitely an anomaly in this regard. Perhaps the firm might have been able to offer the option of subsidised accomodation or even expensing food and accomodation for those who cannot otherwise stay within London.
Very good. Absolutely everything you could possibly want - bars, clubs etc. wherver you go. But London prices - so expect to be paying £8-13 a cocktail, and £4-5 for a pint. That being said there are all types of music, restaurants and everything is very accessible with the tube.
Yes. Opportunities to attend lecture programmes, social group meetings and events, volunteering activities and find out more about life in PwC beyond the work. Spoke to associate who plays women's football at a high level and had found that PwC were very accomodating in allowing her to leave early some days to get to training sessions. Worklife balance is relatively good - and PwC also have their own sports teams. Within a week of being at the firm even as an intern we had been invited to take part in the 'PwC games' including triathlons, 10ks etc.
