The Role
The quality of the work I was doing actually surpised me. I went into it expected something not too disimilar from summer work where you get the drinks round and just get a few of the jobs no-one else wants at all but I was really involved with a lot of different work including client meetings while on the internship which was really good
At the offices I worked at everyone but the partners sit at the same set of desks and everyone moves around slightly each day so there are no set seats. This meant that to be honest I didn't know whether some of the people I was talking to were junior associates or senior managers which meant it was a really friendly environment. One of the partners also always sat in these same desks each day which showed a personal touch
I was asigned a buddy from the first day and they got me involved in lots of different activities including playing sport with some of my work colleagues. They also drected me in the right direction on multiple occassions. The only problem was that with so many different people out it was hard to know who to ask about different topics as it would never be the same person but this happens at all companies
Some days were not so busy but these were usually because I knew I had a lot of work the next day and wanted to make sure I didn't get work that I couldn't actually finish but there were opportunities for you to be as busy as you liked really. Since there was so many people in and out of work for different reasons you could actually end up covering for some of the more junior people occassionally
There was quite a lot of responsibility in this internship. Your deadlines weren't monitored by anyone so you had to make sure you knew what you were doing and some of the work that I did got shown straight to the partner to see what he thought of it and occassionally you would be filling in for the junior associate so there may not have been someone junior to check over your work for you
There was a wide variety of learning materials online which we were advised to look at so you could do as little or as may of these as you wanted. The variety of jobs that you are involved in also forces you to learn about all of the key areas and all of my colleagues were more than happy to ask questions about any of the topics. We were also forced to do a presentation at the end of the internship to show something that we had learned which is obviously developing presentation skills and then also your technical skills as this was the first time I had to exmplain to the material so someone else
The Company
So there was a three day training session at the start of the internship which explained all of the key areas of PwC and this was well run with quite a tight schedule and then there was more training when we got into the offices for another two days about more general things like how to fill out timesheets etc. After this most of the work we got was up to us to sort out but obviously we got more some help at the start but by the end of the internship we were quite independent. This seemed like a fairly well organised plan for the internship and then there was the intern challenge presentations at the end of the internship so overall it was well run
Sports and Social Club
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
The company is still growing and especially the area I worked in which was transfer pricing there is a real demand for people in this area no only at PwC but in all companies so the employment prospects are looking good for this. For moving up the company there is a fairly standard method which people get promoted by which is mainly based on exams at the start and then of performance. Each person gets a rating based on their feedback and then this rating along with any business cases helps determine future prospects along with other things such as bonuses etc.
The Culture
There was a really good social scene at the work pace. Although quite a lot of the interns would be away at different clients each week there would be a small group that would go out for drinks each friday and then at the end of each of the months there was drinks for the whole office which a large number of people went to as well as a special event that happened there where I took some of my holiday and spend a friday afternoon socialising with my department and having a good meal in the evening.
While working on the internship I lived at home which was about a thirty five minute train journey away and this overall cost me about one hundred pounds for a month pass and then obviously living at home was free but I believe that there was 西瓜视频 accommodation fairly near that some people used. Socialising in some of the areas was slightly more expensive but compared to some other places like London, was quite affordable and a fair amount of the socialising meals, drinks etc. was paid for so this cost was not really that high
There were plenty of activities that you could do outisde of work. There was a wide range of sports clubs which including badminton, squash, hockey and football with some of these competing against other companies in a league and some of them just inviting people from other companies down so these were also very good social events to go to. There were also other clubs I believe but I personally didn't get involved in these and then there were team away days which some of the interns got to tag along to during the internship where the team got to bond by doing fun activites like rowing etc.
