The Role
The internship at PwC is reall interesting, as everyday you are doing something different. During my 6 weeks, I worked on 3 different clients, and got a good view of what it woul be like working for PwC. Additionally, you meet so many different people. The good thing about the placement, is that the frst week is a training week, and PwC pay for you and all the other iterns (there was 400 of us) to stay in a hotel for a couple of days, and do team building exercises and networking and evening drinks! All paid for by PwC, during this week you really realise how much PwC invest in you. ....oh, and they give you laptops :)
The teams you work on really appreciate having someone else to help out, especially if the deadline is close. The great thing is, whether on client site or in te office, I always felt people were really friendly and took time to talk to you and get to know you.
When you start your placement, you are given a peoples manager and a buddy. On the first day bck in the office, we went for lunch with our people's manager and buddy, it was a great way to socialise and get to know each other a bit more. My first client, I was with my buddy, and I was able to ask all sorts of questions, and she coached me through all the PwC software, I learnt so much from her, it was so nice to have the guidance and knowing that they really want to help so you feel comfortable and know what your doing. I have been coached throughout all my jobs, and there is always someone on a team who takes you under their wing and wants to help you make the most of it. Your people's manager checks up o you every week, and sees how your doing, and reviews your feedback, and a buddy is someone who you have a closer relationship with, who is also fairly new, but has been through the process recently and can help you with everything!
Naturally the workload depends on how much the team has to do that day, and whether the client has provided everything that we need. Majorityof the days I had enough to do, but a couple days I didn't have as muc. However, your given e-learns to do throughout your placement, so quiet times were used for this! Also the Dragons Den project is good to get into if your not as busy one day, you can really work on your ideas and comment on others.
I was given alot of responsibilty right from the beginning, on my first week at the client office, I was already speaking to the client myself to go throught things, I really did not expect that I would be able to do this as an intern, but its so good, as it gives you a true representation of what working at PwC will be like
I am so so happy I did this internship, hopefully I will be offered a job at the end of it, but even if I'm not, I've enjoyed it, its generously paid, and I have that I worked for one of the big 4 auditors on my CV. The traning was great, and I really got a taste of what working here would be like. I thought as an intern I would be making teas/coffees/photocopying, but I've actually been as equal as the other team members and really got a feel for what it would be like. I know alot of interns that joined the same time as me didn't have a finance/accounting background, I did economics, but I dont think not having a finance degree will disavantage you in anyway. It did help me understand certain acronyms, and things, but it's defienetely not a major thing, and they tell you this on the training week aswell. I thik getting a feel of work life and the real worls, has definetely helped me to be more organised, manage my time more effiiently and will definetely help me be more motivated when I go back to uni.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was great! Everyone had a really positive attitude, there was a nice social coffee/lunch area. There was also dress down friday every week, and then this was carried out throughout the office for the whole summer (unless you were with a client). There was end of month drinks where 拢600 tab was put on for the whole office, and then champagne in the office on friday to celebrate promotions in the office. Fridays we finished at 5pm rather than 5;30. The pople were really friendly, there was a lot of graduates so there was alot of people we could really get on with.
The iternship was set out great, the first week was training, and then two days in our chosen office, (mine was St. Albans) to go through more training, meet people, go for lunch with our people manager & buddy and get our staff cards and leanr how to use our laptops and some fun games! It was really thought out and planned well, and training week was so much fun
During the week we stayed in a hotel in Windsor, you really realise how much PwC invest in you. Everything was paid for, drinks at the bar was free, breakfast/lunch/dinner was paid for in the hotel, and you really realise how much they spent considering there was 400 interns. The tranig days were insightful, they had guest speakers, and partners came along to the partner/intern dinner on the last night.
Company Parties/Events
I would definetely want to carry on working for PwC, the opportunities are endless. You can also go on succumbment into other ares of work, or other offices or even other countries. Alot of people from my office had done this, some went to australia/america/canada/greece. The opportunities are endless.
The Culture
Yes, there as regularly drinks after work, social events, there was a ball aswell, theres so much you can get involved in if you want to. Theres sport events, they got to the theatre and there is always something going on!
I lived at home, as I was based in St. Albans, but i know alot of interns got a flat share together. St. Albans is 20 mins tran to london, so theres so much to do and see!
Nightlife is good, you based in other client sites, so sometime I was working in central london, sometimes Hertfordhsire, but petrol is paid for and so is train tickets, you could easily go out after work with colleagues. St Albans club wise theres about 4 or 5, but there are ALOT of bars and pubs, that are very social!
Yeah there was alot of things to do, and its very easy to organise something you want to do within the office and there will always be someone up for something
