    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Everyone made me feel welcome from Day 1 which made even the early mornings enjoyable. The tasks I completed were of the same level as an associate so I understood what level would be required if I were to start work next year. It was also rewarding knowing that the work I produced would be used for the client - rather than giving the interns mundane tasks we were personally adding value to the project.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • All members of the team from every grade spent time getting to know myself and the other interns. It was nice to see partners and directors happy to sit with you for 30 minutes and explain what projects they have been involved in and learn about their career progression. When swapping projects my previous team sent an email round thanking me for my time on the project and senior managers sent me indidvidual emails. This was an extremely kind gesture and made me feel my time and effort had been valued.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a People Manager, a buddy and a mentor on the project. This was very useful as I had three points of contact in case one was busy but they also each had clear roles so I knew who to contact when. My People Manager was keen to meet or call at least once a week and always responded promptly to my queries. Unfortunately both my buddy and first project mentor went on holiday for the first and then second week of my project and although I had a temporary replacement they weren't quite as devoted to help me progress and make sure I was busy. Therefore maybe for future internships try and select buddys that don't have long holidays during the internship? - my only criticism!

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • For the first two weeks I wasn't as busy on the project but I think that was because there wasn't as much work going on in the workstream I was put in. I seeked additional work on the project, helped out with some internal roles and got involved helping on stand-alone piece of work on another project. This meant I was busy. It was refreshing to see most people leave the office around 5:30pm. There was no pressure to stay just to 'show face' instead when you had completed your work and it was the end of the day I was encouraged to leave!

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given work of the same standard as associates currently on the FftF programme. Therefore my work would be presented to the client which came with huge responsibility. On my second project I was working in a much smaller team of 6 with only 3 based in my office. This meant I was given a larger work load and 'owned' certain documents. Moreover as I joined the project at the initialisation of it there was a large amount of responsibility to make sure we were finding out exactly what the issues were as all future suggested solutions would be based on this work!

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My Excel and powerpoint skills definitely improved. The excel skills will particularly help me do things more efficiently in my degree next year at university. I developed professional skills as I learnt office ettique, how to prepare and act in meetings and how to engage with fellow colleagues and clients. My presentaion skills improved as I was often put on the spot in calls or internal meetings and asked to explain the work I had been doing to the rest of the team. I also got to practise my presentation skills in an internal associate meeting which was a more relaxed environment so it wasn't as scary!

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The Leeds office atmosphere was great on both client site and in the office. The weekly Huddle Board was a great opportunity to catch up with what everyone had got up to during the week and see new faces - I even facilitated it one week! Cakes were brought in to celebrate people's birthdays and everyone was very welcoming. Nobody was excluded from going to lunch or drinks instead there was definitely an 'anyone can join' vibe.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • From the first few training days at Windsor to the first day in the office everything appeared seamless. In Windsor there appeared to be no hick-ups. Everyone knew where they were meant to be when and all instructions to us were explained clearly. The only problem I has was not getting paid the first week however after a call to HC (with a 30 minute hold time...) it was sorted out quickly and there was no problem.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There were Webex trainings we could take part in and e-learns to complete on the first few days. There was also compulsory risk and compliance training I took part in through Spark. Both my mentors on my first and second project spent time explaining some of the PwC systems e.g. Iris, Map files, Clientwise and Avention. This will be particularly useful if I secure a job with the firm. I was also invited to various training days e.g. Excel workshops, however unfortunately they were after the end of my internship. I was also invited to a variety of meetings from workshops to face to face meetings to develop a variety of interaction skills.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would like to hope I have made a good impressoin during my internship and will be offered a job. My only issue is that I would like to work in the London office however I did my internship in the Leeds office. On the first day I was asked if I wanted to work in Leeds and when I said I hoped to transfer to London for a graduate job it was not taken well. Personally I applied to Leeds as my parents have a house nearby and London would have been too expensive to live on the internship salary. Therefore I think they should make it clear when you apply to the Leeds office they aren't very positive about people changing office location - I personally didn't think it would be an issue. Now I wish I looked more into a way to finance living in London for 8 weeks!

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement 西瓜视频s/colleagues?
  • At least once a week there were team or associates drinks. This was a great way to get to know the other people in your team or of a similar grade. It was also an informal environment to ask questions about working at PwC and any problem you had had during the day. Everyone always went to get lunch together and when the weather was good we would sit outside in the sun which was more fun than sitting at your desk in the heat!

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived at home with my parents so my accomodation was free which was useful. I had to drive into work though as the bus was inconvient (took over double the amount of time) and therefore parking was a cost. However the Leeds PwC reception gave me a discount card for the parking which cut my parking costs by two thirds. This made it less expensive to travel into work. Leeds socialising wasn't too expensive however being used to Durham 西瓜视频 prices it was a bit more of a shock! Then for me getting home after a few drinks was more expensive as I couldn't catch a bus or drive so had to get a taxi. But that is just because the transport in Leeds isn't very good!

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There was a wide variety of nightlife in Leeds. We went to a variety of bars - from more formal ones with clients to more 西瓜视频y ones the the associates and other interns. We all particularly liked the rooftop bars where we could sit in the sun! There were also lots of different clubs you could go to at the weekend or on a Friday night and they were all very busy. It was good as people to leave at various times in the night when they wanted to go home or they didn't like the scene at the next venue.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The PwC Leeds consulting team didn't interact much with other lines of service therefore I only really got involved in Consulting events. I asked about joining the Leeds office netball team as I knew some people in audit doing it but nobdoy knew about it in the department. I'm not sure whether this is because consultants are usually as client site and are therefore not free during the week for training sessions or whether they are just less inclusive? However I would like to have known more about office wide clubs. However there were some emails sent round to the whole office informing us of bake sales, choir practises etc. If I had been interested in these particular acitivities I could have found out about them through these occasional emails.
