The Role
Overall the internship was very enjoyable and it exceeded my expectations. During the six weeks I got a good insight to the firm and I felt I learnt more about accounting/auditing than what I had learnt in university in the past year. However, I think I would have got an even better experience if the internship was a few weeks longer.
A great thing at PwC was that colleagues from all levels were always willing to help, give advice about future options etc. The colleagues acknowledged that I was an intern and they even encouraged me to ask as many questions as needed. I only worked in small audit teams (2-5 people) and in all engagements I felt I was part of team contributing to the overall audit.
Instructions were always given at the beginning of each task and I always had an opportunity to ask further questions if I was unsure about anything. The same applied both to senior managers and more junior staff e.g. senior associates. After engagements, I was able to obtain constructive feedback from my colleagues
Summer is supposed to the quiet season in audit but I still felt I had enough things. I felt I was responsible of my own time management and this very much let me choose whether I wanted to finish at 5:30pm or continue a bit longer. My conclusion would be that I could be really busy if I wanted to be but no one was pressurising me to complete the job quicker
I expected I would not be given too much responsibility - instead I would just be "shadowing" in the engagements. However, that was a completely incorrect assumption. From the very first week I was expected to communicate with clients at the meetings. In a few audits, I was fully responsible of completing those FSLI's that I was given
During my third year at university, I have noticed accounting modules are slightly easier than what they would be if I had not completed the internship. From PwC I got a good, robust practical foundation which hopefully complements my studies during my final year. As well as this, I have increased my further employability skills by improving my professionalism and network.
The Company
The atmosphere in my line of service was really friendly and good. People really were friends with each other. People generally have a lot work to do but they still seem to be able to maintain the work/life balance fairly well. Atmosphere at the client's site depends more on the client than your colleagues.
I think this an area where PwC excels. We had a three day induction at the beginning where we were able to meet all fellow interns around the country. Induction included some line of service specific training and a lot of networking. I felt the induction was valuable opportunity and made starting at my base office easier. Overall, the internship was organised really well
All Big4 firms provide attractive graduate opportunities. Big4 to its staff heavily and provides good opportunities for promotions and salary increases. I also feel the work life balance at PwC is very manageable. The only thing I would complain about is the graduate starting salary which is not much above 20k in the north west. You live with that but clearly it is lower than what banks would offer. However, Big4 pays your ACA.
The Culture
I was based in Manchester which is obviously a lot cheaper than London would be. I lived at my 西瓜视频 flat throughout the summer and that decreased my living costs compared to if I had to live in another city. Nightlife in Manchester is great and there are a lot of places to go after work etc.
