The Role
I really enjoyed my time at PwC. I spent the majority of my time with the Corporate Tax team but also got to work with HRS and Corporate Finance. I got to experience a lot of different aspects of working with PwC whilst I was there and work on a large range of clients so no two days were the same. I got to do a lot more than I thought I would and all in all wish it didn't go so fast!
Everyone in the tax team was really welcoming. The team wasn't very big so I got to know nearly everyone whilst I was there. I was invited along to various social events including tennis practice. They were also really helpful and patient when I didn't understand something too. The team are probably one of the main reasons that if I were able to do it all over again or were offered a grad job that I would say yes.
For the duration of my internship I had both a buddy and a people manager. My buddy was a senior associate and met her on the Thursday of my first week (first day in the office). A lot of the work I got was from her but it was good having someone to go ask questions to if I had other questions about other pieces of work I was doing or anything else PwC related. Everyweek I also had a catch-up meeting with my people manager so I had the opportunity then to ask any questions too. The 西瓜视频 recruitment team were also quite helpful when it came to other things that my buddy and people manager couldn't answer.
Most days I was fairly busy. The nature of the team I was in meant that one day I could be very very busy but other days I wouldn't be so busy. If I did run out of work it wasn't very hard to go find someone who would have something for me to do. I also had the 'Dragon's Den Project' to work on if I did have a spare few moments whilst waiting for someone to give me work to do so I wouldn't get too bored. The office was rather quiet in the last weeks as lots of people were on holiday so this did make getting work a little bit harder.
I was given a lot more responsibility than I thought I would be given. I got to do a lot of work that was actually given to the client or HMRC. This was a bit scary but it made me feel like I was actually contributing to the business and that I wasn't 'just an intern'. And the work I was given wasn't just scanning, filing and other administrative tasks - I got to work on actual tax computations and carry out research for clients.
I think I have improved how productive I work and I really think this will help in the last year of university. I have become more familar with email/calendar softwares and using them to communicate effectively with people which will definitely help in a future career. There's a lot of PwC specific pieces of software and systems that I have become a lot more comfortable with and would benefit me a lot if I were to join as a graduate.
The Company
In general the office I worked in seemed to have quite a relaxed atmosphere, a lot different from what I was maybe expecting. The majority of people are very socialable and there seems to be a 'work hard play hard' mentality. A lot of the people in the office are very sporty and active which I really liked and a lot of the sports that people do are with other people from the office. The office feels quite young too.Again it is one of the main reasons I wish my time here didn't go so fast!
The internship did have a fairly good general structure. It began with a three day residential induction followed by a two day office induction. This really helped set us up for the 6 weeks we were with PwC. During my induction I was given a schedule for my 5 remaining weeks but it wasn't really needed and it was hardly followed during those weeks. In the last week we travelled down to London for the finale of our 'Dragons Den Project' and travel was all organised for us which helped a lot. The 西瓜视频 recruitment team were very good at organising things for us if needed.
PwC invested A LOT in all the interns. In particular the three day residential induction which we had at the beginning of the internship. All of our travel, food and accomodation was paid for whilst we were there. We were also given laptops and accessories to use whilst on our internships that were all brand new. We also had weekly presentations to watch on various topics throughout our internship. At the end of the internship we were flown down to London for the day for the finale of the 'Dragon's Den Project'. They invested a lot into this project to allow us to do it.

Future employment with PwC is very appealing. I went into the internship not sure if I would want to work and train here. I really got to know the tax team here well and would really want to come back and start my career here. I feel that the environment and type of work is suited to me and that I would enjoy doing it after I graduated. I also think that it would be a really good firm to train with as well.
The Culture
There was only one other intern in my office in my intake. I did however get to meet many other interns from all over the Uk at the residential induction. We had quite a lot of time to socialise so there was a good social scene there. I believe that in the larger offices the interns did do things together outside work. At my office we just went for lunch quite a bit and we did meet up with the interns on the previous intake to get their take on the whole experience.
I lived at home whilst on my internship so didn't have to worry about the cost of living. The cost of living in this area can be quite high though so I am glad I stayed at home. Socialising in the area I worked in wasn't too expensive. I did spend quite a lot on lunches though whilst on my internship but I was taken out for lunch by colleagues quite a few teams (every month the team has a lunch together which is nice).
Although I didn't go out whilst on my internship, I am from the area so I know what the nightlife is like. It is relatively good because of the two universities in the city but it can be quite quiet during the summer when all the 西瓜视频s are away on summer vacation. The office was fairly near the centre of the city wher the majority of the nightlife is so it would have been relatively easy to go out after work on fridays.
There were lots of opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work. The office have a volunteering scheme and there was a volunteering day whilst I was on my internship. Unfortunately I was unable to attend but the other intern went and enjoyed it. My office also partakes in a corporate decathalon competition throughout the year and whilst I was on my internship there was the tennis competition. I got invited along to tennis practice whilst I was on my internship which was fun even though I'm awful at tennis!
