    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The placement was very well organised and I was given a clear set of objectives when I arrived. This ensured that I was always busy working and there was never a dull moment where I did not know what I was meant to be doing. There were additional benefits such as help finding accommodation and free lunches.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was regularly told that my internship work would contribute to the team’s 2015 agenda and that it was going to be used by the team. The work I was set was useful, helpful and adds value to the team and the business. This made me feel like a valuable asset to the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The support from my supervisor was just the right amount. At the start of the internship he gave me introductory documents that helped me get started on my work. In the first week he also spent a lot of time explaining the individual tasks I was set in a lot more detail. From then it was up to me, if I wanted help I could ask and he was happy to take as much time as it took to answer my questions.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My daily tasks were all based on the objectives I had been set. At the start of my internship I was very busy with these objectives, and worked to optimise the deliverables I produced until the end. If I wanted a change of pace, or felt like doing something else I could always ask my supervisor or other members of the team and there was always something for me to do.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given tasks that were based on the objectives that were set at the start of the internship. One of my tasks was completely self-starting with no help from my supervisor or other members of the team. Whenever I was unsure about anything regarding the other tasks I was always able to ask my supervisor. My decisions and ideas within the internship will have a lasting impact.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Being able to work on my own on a project that is self-starting is something I had to do within the internship and is a useful skill for my final year at university. In addition to that software skills are useful for my degree. Going forward I have learnt a lot about the project environment in the oil and gas industry and that will hopefully assist me in my job in the future.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was casual. It was never stressful, people around me usually had time for a short chat or a coffee break in-between. Everyone in the office was very friendly and happy to help with any questions.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised. Before the internship started I got a proforma sent to me that outlined the team I had been placed in, my supervisors’ name and my deliverables during the internship. On my first day at work my supervisor explained each of the objectives in more detail and advised me to make a structured project plan to help track my progress.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • During the internship I took part in a presentation skills training, a linked-in guide, lunch&learns and a philanthropic day. All of these opportunities helped me develop in different ways. The presentation skills training was a useful course as it is something I will encounter in the future, at university and at work.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future employment prospects are very appealing. During the internship I got the chance to speak to various people who are on the graduate scheme and they all had very positive things to say about it. Like the internship the graduate scheme seems very structured with lots of training opportunities and includes all the benefits interns get and more.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs/colleagues?
  • A number of events were organised for us and we got all of the other interns' contact details and had a facebook group prior to the start of the internship. This ensured that we all knew each other and could organise additional events ourselves. 12 of us lived in a house together which was nice because it never got lonely and was only possible because we had each other’s contact details prior to starting.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The placement was in the outskirts of London, in Zone 6. I lived in Zone 5 in University accommodation. It was a reasonable price for the London area, comparable to my University accommodation in Durham. The pay more than covered the accommodation, so it was not a problem. A lot of social activities such as touch rugby at work were completely free. Socialising in restaurants was more expensive, but not more so than in Durham.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • My work place was located in the outskirts of London (Zone 6). It was easy to get into central London or Clapham/Putney where the nightlife was really good. The immediate area of my workplace was not great for nightlife, but the greater area had many options regarding where to go on a night out.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Outside of work there were options to join sports clubs, such as the graduate touch rugby club or the running club. Other activities included charity events, and there was even a charity ball that we were invited to during our internship. With flexi time there was a lot of time to get involved in activities outside of work or working hours.
