The Role
The summer intern is a very well structured 10 weeks programme with 1 week inductions and 9 weeks real work practises. My experience in RBS Edinburgh is clearly positive. RBS colleagues are very nice and easy going.
The RBS colleagues are normally very supportive and nice. We always have nice discussion with different topics. They sometimes also make funny jokes. In general, I amn valued by RBS colleagues.
The line manager support is very comprehensive, not only in RBS business, but also in social communications. She is always very patient to my questions even during the busy period. She also recommend me many nice place to visit in Edinburgh. Her feedbacks are very constructive with both prons and cons. She is a good line manager.
It is very balanced from 9 am to 5 pm. There are good work life balance.
Ts & Cs Project: I have established the regular communication with stakeholders of the Terms and Condition Reader (Ts and Cs reader), including CPB, Technology Solutions, FCO, Design and Transformation via email, face to face meetings and telephone and audio conversation. I am transparent during the communication with all the progress updated regular and questions answered with the best of my knowledge. The suggestions and opinions of stakeholders are recorded and translated into the design of Ts and Cs functionality and solutions. KYSS Benefit: The benefit mapping of KYSS programme is not without challenging. Many projects are still at the initial stages and most stakeholders do not have the background of project management. They can not make clear distinction between benefit, output and outcome. Considering the current situation, I have drafted the benefit mapping with clear illustrations of output, benefit, outcome and RBS objectives prior to the meeting. Stakeholders are encouraged to make any comments and suggestions towards my work. With their comments, this would largely minimise my subjective bias and interpretation. Finally, I have sent all updated work to the stakeholders for any additional opinions. Others: I have been proactive in engaging with different networks, events and activities: Agile training, SME Design day tour, FCO tour including listening into customer calls, and other e.g. Pay day drink. I have proposed unique insights to RBS colleagues across a range of different meetings, such as the KYSS benefit session held by Terry Lawson. Also, I share my insights with my line manager in our regular meetings.
The 10 weeks summer intern provides a good learning opportunity in new technology, ideas as well as problem solving skills. The following actions have been taken in order to achieve a better learning result. PBB Transformation Skills: 1. Utilizing the intranet e-learning resources in banking regulations, money laundry and others 2. Learning project management skills by readying the book 鈥淢anaging Successful Programme from MSP (the mapping of project benefit and stakeholder management)鈥 3. Learning and research new technology, business model and studies through different channels (internet, eSpark, technology solution and supply chains services) 4. Integration of previous academic knowledge in project management with RBS PBB Transformation context 5. Learning by practise with continuous consultation with the line managers and other colleagues 6. Participation of different learning sessions: Agile software development, customer led design and others Some Problem Solving Cases: 1. Ts & Cs Problem 1: difficult to identify the similar technology Solutions: searching technology by functions rather than technical feasibility Result: identified several similar technologies 鈥 the contract management software, cloud scanning and others Problem 2: difficult to find the appropriate technology development capacity Solutions: identifying more than one development channels in order to mitigate the risk Result: have established some connections with the different development channels 2. KYSS Benefit Problem 1: even the stakeholders themselves do not know the benefits Solutions: Stakeholders may not give me accurate answer directly. Therefore, I have prepared a list of benefits for their references. Result: the draft KYSS benefit mapping has been done with the initial agreement with most stakeholders Problem 2: the ambiguity of project output, outcome and benefit Solutions: reading the book 鈥淢anaging Successful Programme from MSP鈥 and continuous consultation with Serena Result: the draft KYSS benefit mapping has been done with the initial agreement with most stakeholders Problem 3: a lack of data, due to the early stage nature of KYSS project Solutions: proposing the potential benefit, rather than ask the stakeholders directly Result: the draft KYSS benefit mapping has been done with the initial agreement with most stakeholders 3. Presentation Problem 1: a very small group with only two colleagues rather than the normal 4-6 sizes Solutions: Planning the work in advance and work harder Result: The draft KYSS benefit mapping has been done with the initial agreement with most stakeholders
