About You
It was a valuable day where we were shown a variety of the Campus's areas and met some current employees. It included some good bit and some slightly repetitive bits, but the aim of the day was to learn about the technical interviews that BP have and that was achieved.
Not hugely applicable here, but they did make the effort to reward us being BP Scholars by making this day scholar specific. this meant that we didnt have to do any of the boring meet and greet and we were treated as if we had some understanding of the company. they also tried to get as much input from us as they could and then rewarded us further by giving us hoodies, which were a brilliant bonus.
this again isnt a hugely relevant question, but we were supported by many members of staff from all areas of the business. we were split in to very small groups with a single employee to go through the interview guidance with which was good, and the staff gave plenty of opportunities to ask questions, involve us and give insight into what we could do within the company.
They gave a bit of insight into the grad scheme and what it would entail, with current grads giving their experiences and them explaining the application process. I was able to ask a few specific questions that i wanted and i was given clear answers. much of the information was not new to me, but may have been to my peers. I now know a couple of things i wasnt aware of before, and this is added exposure to the company which i can draw upon after my degree.
The Company
It was well structured with a long list of activities and insights. they had to accommodate many academic strands into one day, which made it more difficult, but we saw a variety of insights. The day was well organised, smoothly run, and planned well.
It was friendly. It being scholar specific meant that i knew the people there already, and we were not nervous about not knowing what to expect. the HR people were nice and the lunch with employees was, although initially awkward, very useful and helpful. I think the general feel of the company is as if they are in a bubble in their own world, very much pushing their own structure, values and ideology, which can be a bit wearing over time. It is done in a friendly way though, and chatting to the staff on a one on one basis is the best part because they seem more real and you get to ask about anything you want. Best to not have forced sessions of one to one, but to allow for us to chat with people if we wish.
Not applicable really. We were taught how to approach the technical interview in small groups and given some useful practice.
It gave more insight to whats on offer in general, not specific to my degree. it would be better to have in depth knowledge of the IST department, since there were many there who wanted to do that as well as me, but the did explain the process well. it consolidated my feelings about the company and the benefits of a role in a grad scheme with BP.
Very much. They seem to be in a BP bubble. The HR guys are all very nice, but they focus greatly on the values, where as they should put more weight on the day to day lives of the employees, the social side and the working relationships/
Not majorly. It wasnt focused on the role i wanted to go into. so whilst it was nice to see some chem eng stuff, it wasnt relevant and gave me very little insight into my ideal role and what it would really entail.
Everything Else
They always pay expenses, are very reasonable and quick to pay.
Yes, a networking lunch. It wasnt really advertised as such, but i got to meet an interesting man who i chatted with. It was good that it wasnt very formal. i didnt feel obliged to ask stupid questions, it was just a good opportunity to see what he thought about aspects of the company i care about.
Nice to see the scholars again. Not really applicable for this event really.
No this wasnt really covered in much depth. It could have been and would be interesting, but it would have been largely irrelevant for the day, as the aim was to prep us for an interview that we were already likely to take.
yeah, only scholars can go, and thats a good thing i reckon.
