About You
We were able to find out techniques which would help us through the application process for both internships or the graduate scheme at BP. It was useful to see what graduates now working at ~BP have been doing since beginning the programme.
As the day was only for BP scholars, we all felt very well cared for and looked after throughout the day, The talks were useful to us, and we were constantly given refreshments and breaks throughout the event. They always asked if we had any questions; but we were not patronized or treated like children.
We were always supervised and taken by a couple of BP staff around the buildings to wherever we needed to be. There were many people on hand to ask questions to is we felt like we needed some help during the activities.
We were given advice and tips for the application process for internships and the graduate programmes at BP, which will help us all next year when we are applying. Additionally we were given practice activities similar to those at an assessment centre to complete, so we would be familiar with the structure of them, if we got through to that stage of the application process.
The Company
It was well-organised, we had the schedule of the day explained to us in the morning, there were plenty of breaks for refreshments or to use the bathroom; the day even finished early. Most of the activities started on time and didn't over-run.
All of the staff were very friendly towards us and were willing to answer any questions we ha or to give us some extra detail on their role within the company. All of the other scholars were excited to be there and happy to take part in all of the activities of the day. The atmosphere was very positive.
They gave us tips on how to answer questions in a technical interview, and explained the processes of an assessment centre; this was to prepare us for upcoming application processes.
We had many talks from graduates working within the firm, but there wasn't much explanation about what career prospects would follow, after completing the Challenge Programme.
BP values were mentioned briefly to us, however, we have been to propitious events as scholars where the values of the company have been explained to us in more detail.
There were chances to see many of the different roles available in the Upstream sector of BP, so we could find out about potential areas we could work in as graduates if we wanted to stay working for BP after university. We saw different valves and sensors you could work on if you had a role on the system operations and control unit; or if you worked as a Geophysicist, you might make use of the 3D projection on the screen in HIVE to assess the subsurface structures and determine where/how to drill.
Everything Else
BP paid for our travel to and from the event, and if our journey was long, we could claim for a room overnight before the event in a nearby hotel, and we could claim for an evening meal at the hotel.
Over lunch there was a chance to sit with some of the BP employees and talk to them about their careers, however, the employees weren't distributed evenly between the tables, so some scholars could talk to many staff members, and others were only able to find out about the career of one person.
We worked as groups for some of the activities, but the event was mostly about listening to people giving talks and finding out about applying for a role at BP, not just about networking.
There were talks about what graduates do while working on-shore and off-shore at BP, but the talks didn't mention social events. At previous BP events, we have had some of the more social activities described to us during talks.
Yes, but the event I attended was specifically for BP Scholars, however, BP do run more general Discovery Days for Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs who don't receive the STEM scholarship.
