About You
I enjoyed seeing the likeness of the facilities to photographs, but actually being able to imagine myself in the working environment. Also, chatting to other Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs from similar backgrounds with varying insights on future prospects was very useful
I felt like the organisers truly saw us as prospective employees, which was reflected in the calibre of people they introduced us to: scientists high up in their field that spared the time to introduce us to their day to day practice
There were a lot of supporting staff helping to run the event and several graduate Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs we could turn to, so even though I had to leave early, at no point was I without someone to show me around
Limited skills gained, as the event was only a day long, but the real asset was the information on the working life, which will heavily inform my perception of working in the oil sector.
The Company
Very well organised, though perhaps because of having to curtail my visit, I would have quite liked one of the tours to have run in the morning session. I did find the energy game useful in opening up the braoder scope of BP and the long term foresight required, though somewhat felt that not having left the room by lunchtime the day was a little slow to get going
Very positive and energetic, fortunately, as we were only given a short time to form the impression of the company. Though because we had to apply or our places, I think all the Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs were very keen and felt fortunate to be there
As mentioned before, there was a limitation to how much we could 'develop' over the course of the day, but the expense to organise such an event suggests they were really investing in us as potential employees
We were toured around a lot of the facilities and saw scientists and office staff in their day to day environment, which painted a true to life representation of what working there might entail. The nature of the work was a little more ambiguous but a game tried to introduce us to it
Only so much we could glean from the day, which was mostly focused on the working environment rather than life outside, though I did learn its environmental credentials consciousness was more prominent than I had initially realised
Though the literature I have read from BP is very detailed and enticing, it just cant replicate seeing the scale of the labs first hand and meeting others who are having similar career thoughts and questions
Everything Else
A fair outcome for the day, and indeed a further incentive to travel several hours
Particularly at lunchtime, where we could chat with the graduates informally. They were all very approachable, so even being shy wasn't too much of a hindrance. Equally valuable was just talking with Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs from other universities in a similar position as myself

Limited
Nothing to lose, and a lot packed into the day. The organisers made every effort to ensure our needs were catered for, and it was more about us testing them as a company than vice versa, which was refreshing. I know that upstream research now holds greater appeal than downstream
