About You
A very good Discovery Day! Provided insight you do not get through internet research. Would reccommend to any undergraduate engineer who is insure about which sector they would aspire to be in after graduating,
They were very welcoming during the day, were very stict on signing in and out of buildings, which is a good thing, our safety remained a priority throughout the day
Great support, encouraged questions every step of the way, were very open about discussing the inner workings of their company to an extent
The day trip provided the link between academia and practical work i was hoping for. I was able see equipment used within the various BP plants, which helped me understand how the different engineering theories I was familiar with translated to a practical setting
The Company
Stuck very closely to a day schedule that we were given initially, also provided taxis for us at the end of the day to get us back to the train station
Was fun, but not in such a way that it took away from the key points of the day
This was a discovery day, so we were just observing the various job roles of BP Staff and graduates across the plant.
There were presentations conducted by graduates, seniors, and even undergraduates doing a year in industry, in which they would explain what they would be involved in on a day-to-day basis
We were able to see some of the company culture in action, not as much as i would have liked to see happening but it was talked about by all of the staff in presentations
The enthusiastic people who showed us around the simulators and the equipment kept on talking about the job roles.
Everything Else
We were fully reimbursed, train tickets/overnight hotels were paid for in advance, and taxis were paid for via a form at the end of the day
There was an hour provided to network and socialise with BP staff and an introductory icebreaker session to meet people from different universities
They provided an hour for networking during lunch for staff to orbit around the tables and talk to people, I would have liked a little more time to speak to all of the staff to get more of an idea of the progression you could get at BP but this is a minor gripe of the day.
Yes there were a lot of fun activities staff were involved in, the presentation discussed the activities you could do in hull, and the history of the surrounding area
I would 100% recommend this insight to every undergraduate regardless of what year of study you are in. I would also encourage other companies to adopt this discovery day idea, as it is beneficial for young engineers to see academic theory in action and will drum up interest for your company with undergraduates
