About You
I really enjoyed the Discovery Day - Geoscience, Petroleum and Reservoir Engineering. I had all my questions answered and gained a real insight into BP and the work that they do. They talks were useful, particularly the welcome by Mick McTier, who talked to us about how BP helps you to develop and what sort of work I could be doing for them. The networking was very well thought out as they supplied a good range of professionals and backgrounds for us to question, which really helped to improve my knowledge of the company.
BP made me feel very welcome. They gave easy directions to the bus station to get their private shuttle service and then to the building for the Discovery Day. We were given muffins and offered hot drinks on arrival and began the day with a welcome talk from Aimee Holt which was all very above and beyond what I was expecting. Lunch was supplied and all of the staff were very helpful when answering questions throughout the day. I couldn't fault anything with the day.
The staff on hand were very happy to help any question or query that I had. They always answered fully and with a lot of information, and when they did not feel as if they knew enough, they asked a more senior member for me. This again was above and beyond what I was expecting from the day. The guidance was fantastic. I couldn't have asked for more.
I did not feel as if I developed any skills in particular on the Discovery Day. The most challenging part was looking at 3D seismic sections, but I had already covered this in my degree. However, the information that I received throughout the day was of great use when deciding which modules to take in my degree for the upcoming year, and had heavily influenced what I am now learning about.
The Company
Very well structured. We were given a timetable at the start of the day, and the day followed this timetable very well. It meant that we all knew what was happening and at what time, which was useful for planning the day and the journey home.
Very warm. The atmosphere was comforting and the welcome that we received made me feel at ease straight away. I think it was a bit awkward right at the very beginning when everyone was getting to know each other, but the ice-breaker was a great way of overcoming this and letting everyone settle down.
As it was Discovery Day, there was very little training on behalf of the company. This was to be expected however as it was an opportunity for me to see the company, and not for them to invest time in me.
Again, the talk by Mick McTier was very useful here. He talked about the jobs he has had and how they came about, and helped me to understand what would be expected of me working for BP.
The company values were emphasised throughout the day, making me very aware of the culture within the company and what it would be like to be part of it.
Before the day I was unsure of my career path. After, I had in my mind to apply for a summer internship with BP that will hopefully set me on the career path that I want within this company.
Everything Else
I was no paid or reimbursed. However, the option to be reimbursed was available. My ticket only cost £10 so I didn't think it was particularly worth the paperwork.
Yes, plenty. There was an hour slot dedicated to networking within the day, where we could talk to people that had gone through the internship programme to their career path and those who had not, and had found themselves working for the company by other routes.
They were very relaxed. We were able to ask any questions that we wanted, and we were given very comprehensive answers.
No. This may be more down to the lack of questions on this topic but it was not emphasised in any of the talks.
Yes. The day in general really opened my eyes as to what working for a company such as BP would be like and I would recommend it to anyone that was slightly unsure as to what they want to do in the future.
