About You
I really enjoyed my experience on the BP Discovery Day - Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering. The day gave me a fascinating insight into life at BP, and in particular information regarding their graduate scheme and internships. We had the opportunity to visit BP's laboratories and testing facilities, which I found particularly helpful as I was able to see what the working environment was like at BP as well as some of the practical work I could be doing. I really enjoyed finding out more about what I could be doing if I worked for BP.
I felt very valued during my time at BP. We were given plenty of information regarding the company and undergraduate/ graduate opportunities available to us, as well as a few 'freebies' such as a hoodie. All my expenses were paid for, and we were given free lunch and refreshments throughout the day. During the day, all the BP employees I met were friendly and welcoming, showing an interest in us joining BP.
I received plenty of guidance and support during the insight. This included a talk on their internship and graduate recruitment process and the opportunity to network with current employees. I would have liked slightly more guidance regarding the later stages of their recruitment process however, since these were slightly different to anything I had done before.
I don't feel that I developed any particular new skills during the insight day. However, I did gain a lot more information about their graduate and internship application and recruitment process. This will be very helpful when I apply for an internship with BP next year. The day has also given me more motivation to work hard next year to achieve good results in order to meet their criteria.
The Company
The insight day was fairly well structured, and each scheduled event ran smoothly into the next with minimal delays. However, I do feel that the order of activities could have been better planned so that we would not spend quite so long sat down at a time - for example using short tours to break up the talks in the morning.
The general atmosphere during the insight day was good - all of the Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs were keen to learn more about BP and all of the employees were keen to help. There were several opportunities to get to know the other Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs, for example during the 'Energy Game', which made the day more relaxed and friendly. Although everyone was dressed very formally, the day was not particularly stressful and there was no pressure put on us by the BP employees.
Since the insight was only one day long, we did not have any training opportunities. However, BP employees did spend some time explaining what we could do to improve our BP application forms and interviews if we decided to apply for an internship or graduate role with them. They also gave us plenty of detailed information on these internships and their graduate scheme, as well as bringing in several employees currently on their graduate scheme to share their experiences with us.
The BP Discovery Day gave us a brief glimpse into life at BP. During the day, we were given tours of their test facilities and laboratories, as well as talks from current members of their graduate scheme and the chance to discuss with employees about their experiences at BP. Due to the short length of the insight, I didn't gain much more understanding about what it would be like to have a full-time tole at BP.
During the BP Discovery Day, we were given talks about the company and its culture. We also were able to meet current employees to hear about their experiences. However, the short duration of the insight meant that we didn't get to experience the company culture first-hand.
The day was helpful in terms of deciding my future career options as it demonstrated to me some of the roles I could be doing at BP. I was also given more information on the structure and content of their internships and graduate scheme, which has encouraged me to apply. I already had BP in mind as a future employer, but this insight helped to reinforce this plan.
Everything Else
All travel expenses were reimbursed, and we were given free lunch and refreshments throughout the day.
Over lunch, we had the chance to network with the employees. They also gave short presentations about their experiences at BP.
Due to the short duration of the insight, there were no social events organised. However, we were given the opportunity to network with current employees over lunch as well as get to know the other Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵs participating in the day during the 'Energy Game' session.
We were given no information on activities employees can get involved in outside of work.
I would highly recommend this insight to a friend, since I learnt a lot about the internships and graduate program at BP as well as some useful application tips. It was also helpful to visit the laboratories and find out more about the day-to-day life of a BP employee.
